Free Stuff in August

Hundreds of free events take place in Vancouver in the month of August, including festivals, concerts, outdoor movies, markets and other great activities.

Of course there are also lots of free parks and places in nature to visit, as well as some of Canada’s most beautiful beaches. But there also free world-class events, dozens of free live music venues and even the occasional free day at the PNE.

  • Harmony Arts Festival – an art market, live music and the film A League of Their Own showing on a big screen outdoors by the waterfront in West Vancouver.
  • Wednesday Farmers Markets – at Main Street in Vancouver as well as in Surrey and Whistler.
  • Starlight Theatre Drive-in Movies – the movie The Fifth Element shows at Richmond’s Lansdowne Centre.
  • CBC Musical Nooners – a free concert with the group Aché Brasil at noon outside the CBC Building.
  • Trout Lake Summer Concert SeriesThe Lonesome Town Painters play Bluegrass at 6:30 pm outside the Trout Lake Community Centre. Note: an amazing children’s playground is right beside the concert venue – so take your kids!
  • Sounds of Summer Music Series Concert a free Bluegrass concert at Surrey’s Hawthorne Park starting at 6:30 pm with the group 5 on a String.

Thursday, August 4th, 2016

  • Harmony Arts Festival – free live music, art displays and the film Under the Tuscan Sun outdoors in West Vancouver.
  • Thursday Farmers Markets – in New Westminster, Granville Island and Downtown.
  • CBC Musical Nooners – free live music with the group Ndidi O from 12 until 1 pm outside the CBC Building at 700 Hamilton Street.
  • Outdoor Movie in Burnaby – the film Minions shows at the Bob Prittie Library starting at around 8:30 pm.
  • Maritime Museum – admission by donation from 5 pm to 8 pm (every Thursday).

  • Harmony Arts Festival – free art festival activities including music, an art market and the movie Kung Fu Panda 3 outdoors in West Vancouver.
  • KitsFest – a sports festival at Kitsilano Beach featuring everything from yoga to tennis, beach volleyball and water polo.
  • North Vancouver Summer Concert Series – free live music starting at 7 pm outdoors at Lynn Valley Village with the band Mazacote, in Edgemont Village with The BobCats and in Deep Cove with Cayla Brooke.
  • Family Movie Nights in the Plaza – tonight’s free film is Zootopia outside the North Vancouver Civic Library starting at around 9 pm.
  • CBC Musical Nooners – a free concert with Warren Dean Flandez at 12 o’clock outside the CBC Building in downtown Vancouver at 700 Hamilton Street.
  • International Summer Night Market – market vendors and community-style entertainment at 12631 Vulcan Way in Richmond.
  • Shipyard Night Market – free live music, food vendors, fresh produce and artisan market stalls by the waterfront in North Vancouver.
  • YVR Take-Off Friday – free activities at the Vancouver International Airport from 9 am to 3 pm, including an 11 am one-hour tour examining some of YVR’s art and architecture.

  • Richmond Maritime Festival – a free 2-day festival with boats and marine-related activities at Britannia Shipyard in Steveston Village.
  • Robson Square Salsa – free salsa lessons and dancing downtown at 3 pm.
  • Summer Sundays Concert Series – free live music outdoors at Burnaby’s Bob Prittie Library between 6:00 and 7:45 pm.
  • Summer Sundays – free live music at Port Moody’s Rocky Point Park with John Delaney & the Indestructibles starting at 2 pm.
  • River District Drive-in Movie – the film The Jungle Book shows at 3650 East Kent Avenue South in New Westminster.
  • International Summer Night Market – Richmond’s original Asian night market takes place from 6 pm to 10 pm at 12631 Vulcan Way.
  • Sunday Farmers Markets – at Ambleside, Coquitlam, Kitsilano, Mt. Pleasant, Steveston Village, Whistler and White Rock.

  • Music on the Wharf – outdoor live music on the Port Haney Wharf in Maple Ridge with country guitarist Ben Click starting at 7:30 pm (by donation).
  • CBC Musical Nooners – a free concert at noon outside the CBC Building at 700 Hamilton Street with folk musician Roy Forbes.

  • CBC Musical Nooners – a free concert at noon outside the CBC Building at 700 Hamilton Street with soul and alternative rock musician David Ward.
  • Trout Lake Summer Concert Series – the Rio Samaya Band plays Latin, Rhumba and Reggae outdoors at the Trout Lake Community Centre beginning at 6:30 pm.
  • Starlight Theatre Drive-in Movies – the animated film Minions shows at Lansdowne Centre at 5300 No. 3 Road in Richmond.

  • North Vancouver Summer Concert Series – free live music outside the library in Lynn Valley with the Fab Fourever Beatles tribute band as well as the R&B group Souled Out in Edgemont Village between 7 pm and 9 pm.
  • CBC Musical Nooners – a free concert at noon with the folk singer Jen Lane on the outdoor CBC Stage at 700 Hamilton Street.
  • International Summer Night Market – Asian foods and market vendors at 12631 Vulcan Way in Richmond.
  • Shipyard Night Market – live music, food trucks and artisan market stalls outdoors at North Vancouver’s Shipbuilders’ Square.
  • Perseids Meteor Shower – lots of shooting stars expected in the night’s sky in darker parts of the Lower Mainland wherever there’s a clear sky.
  • YVR Take-Off Friday – free activities at the Vancouver International Airport from 9 am to 3 pm, including an 11 am one-hour tour examining some of YVR’s art and architecture.

  • Trout Lake Summer Concert Series – the band Silk Road performs outdoors at the Trout Lake Community Centre starting at 6:30.
  • Sounds of Summer Music Series Concert live music at Surrey’s Fleetwood Park Gardens at 15802-80th Avenue featuring Spanish guitarist and Caribbean steel drum player Rossi.
