Vancouver’s Listel Hotel on Robson Street

The West End’s Listel Hotel is a conveniently-located 3.5-star hotel. The place is known for its emphasis on both the arts and the environment.

The Vancouver hotel was founded in 1992 and it’s full of a variety of art that’s always on display throughout the building. Every room has original artwork to admire, and each floor has its own artistic theme that showcases local, international and/or First Nations pieces. The average room isn’t “full” of art, but they all have at least one or two pieces.

The Listel is a proud smoke-free and zero-waste hotel. It provides guests with complimentary filtered water along with access to the Internet and a small fitness centre. The hotel is home to the Forage restaurant, which claims to be one of the standout places to eat in the area.

The hotel allows up to two pets per room with an extra charge (of around $25 per night the last time we checked), and all furry friends must be leashed in the hotel’s common areas. Underground parking at the hotel costs about the same.

Where is the Listel Hotel?

The Listel Hotel is located at 1300 Robson Street in Vancouver’s West End.

Robson Street is a popular, trendy street featuring high-end shops and numerous restaurants that are popular among tourists. Major attractions that are about a five-minute drive away from the hotel include Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Vancouver Art Gallery and English Bay. Granville Island with its shops and theatres is about 15 minutes from the hotel.

Listel Hotel’s Robson Street location is very convenient, especially if you like shopping and eating out. The hotel is at the edge of the street’s busiest and most interesting area. There are lots of fashionable name-brand shops and boutiques close by.

If you like Japanese things, an interesting place to check out is the Konbiniya Japanese Centre. It’s just a block from the hotel at 1238 Robson Street. The shop is like a little corner store you might find in Japan. For anyone who’s lived in that country before, what you’ll see inside might make you homesick.

If you like heritage buildings and Canadian history, another place we recommend visiting is the Roedde House Museum. It’s located at 1415 Barclay Street, so just three or four blocks away. It’s a house that was built by Sir Francis Rattenbury who was the architect who designed a number of famous buildings in BC including the Empress Hotel and Parliament Buildings in Victoria and the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver.

Hotel Rooms at the Listel

At the hotel there is a Modern Art Floor, a Museum Floor and a Gallery Floor. There are also Artist Series Suites and a BC Suite.

Rooms and the hallway on the first of the above-mentioned floors have modern art on display. Rooms on the Museum Floor have pieces that are loaned from Vancouver’s Museum of Anthropology which is located at the University of British Columbia (or UBC). Rooms on the Gallery Floor have original art by both international and Canadian artists.

Compared to the other floors, the Gallery rooms are usually a bit more expensive. They are also on a slightly higher floor.

The Artist Series Suites offer fancier accommodations and include a living room. The BC Suite, meanwhile, is extra wholesome and comes with its own large outdoor patio. It’s also considerably more expensive.

Rooms on the Modern Art, Museum and Gallery floors are all very nice. They are likely what give the place its 3.5-star rating. The suites though are closer to what you might find in a suite at a 4-star hotel, and the BC Suite would rank even higher.

Hotel Restaurants

Ocean Wise Seafood ProgramThe restaurant at the Listel Hotel is Forage. Similar to the hotel, the restaurant tries to limit its waste and conserve energy. It also uses fresh local produce as much as it can, and it serves fish from the Ocean Wise program. The focus of the place is on local produce, meats and seafood.

There are lots of other great restaurants in the area too. A popular Japanese one is Ramen Danbo which is right across the street from the Listel Hotel at 1333 Robson Street. It specializes in Fukuoka-style Japanese noodle soups (which are delicious)! The restaurant is reasonably-priced and there is often a lineup to get in.
