June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A number of events take place in North Vancouver to celebrate.

North Vancouver is on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) and Tsleil-Waututh (səlilwətaɬ) First Nations.

National Indigenous History Month Activities in North Vancouver

The month of June is a time to honour and celebrate Indigenous culture. Numerous events take place across the Lower Mainland, especially on and around National Indigenous Peoples Day. In 2026, National Indigenous Peoples Day is on June 21st.

The North Vancouver activities take place throughout the entire month. North Vancouver Recreation & Culture hosts a range of Indigenous-focused workshops, experiences, and self-guided activities.

 

Workshops and Activities

North Vancouver Recreation & Culture offers several free and low-cost workshops during June. These events highlight Indigenous arts, movements, and cultural practices. There is also a self-guided public art tour featuring Indigenous artists.

2026 programming is listed below.

 

Cedar Mat Weaving Workshop

Taking place at the Delbrook Community Recreation Centre, the Cedar Mat Weaving Workshop is hosted by Red Cedar Woman. Employees from the Indigenous company show participants how to weave a small decorative mat.

The Cedar Mat Weaving Workshop runs from 5:15 to 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 4th. It’s free to attend, but pre-registration is encouraged to guarantee you a spot.

Dreamcatcher Workshop

In 2026, a Squamish Nation artist leads a Dreamcatcher Workshop. Participants create their own dreamcatchers and learn about their cultural meaning and history.

The event takes place on Sunday, June 7th, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. It’s held at the Delbrook Community Recreation Centre. Admission costs $5.

Pow Wow & Hoop Dancing Workshop

Siblings Chelsei and Noah Gray offer an interactive workshop about different styles of Pow Wow dancing. Participants can learn basic steps and ask questions as well. Admission is free.

The event takes place on Thursday, June 11th, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. It’s held at Lynn Valley Village Community Complex.

 

Pow Wow Zumba

Pow Wow Zumba is an outdoor dance workout led by Madelaine McCallum. Participants learn a mix of traditional and contemporary movements in a welcoming group setting.

This free activity runs on Thursday, June 18th in 2026. It takes place from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Seylynn Park.

Hoop Dancing Workshop

The Hoop Dancing Workshop is a powerful dance led by Indigicree Hoop Dancing Company. Participants learn how to blend movements with cultural messages, all about resilience and other important values.

In 2026 the workshop happens from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Seylynn Park on Thursday, June 25th. It’s free for everyone to drop-in.

Self-Guided Indigenous Public Art Tour

One way to participate in National Indigenous History Month, year-round, is through the self-guided Indigenous public art tour in North Vancouver. North Vancouver Recreation & Culture has curated an interactive map featuring more than 40 artworks by Indigenous artists.
