June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A number of events take place in North Vancouver to celebrate.
North Vancouver is on the traditional unceded territories of the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw) and Tsleil-Waututh (səlilwətaɬ) First Nations.

National Indigenous History Month Activities in North Vancouver
The month of June is a time to honour and celebrate Indigenous culture. Numerous events take place across the Lower Mainland, especially on and around National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st. 2025 Workshops and Activities
North Vancouver Recreation & Culture hosts several free workshops in June of 2025. Each event highlights Indigenous arts and culture. There’s also a self-guided tour of public art. Workshops and other events happening this year are described below.
Pow Wow Zumba (June 5th)
Pow Wow Zumba is a dance workout happening on Thursday, June 5th in 2025. It takes place from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on the grass field at Seylynn Park. The venue is located at 625 Mountain Highway. Madelaine McCallum leads participants through the one-hour session. She’s an experienced dancer with a Cree and Métis background. Participants learn a mixture of traditional and modern dance styles.
Coast Salish Wool Weaving Workshop (June 5th)
Also happening on Thursday, June 5th this year is a Coast Salish wool weaving workshop. Participants get to weave wool bracelets while learning about the significance of the art. This workshop is led by Jordan Dawson. It runs from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the Lynn Creek Community Recreation Centre at 1491 Hunter Street.

Red Cedar Woman Weaving Workshops (June 12th & 19th)
The Indigenous company Red Cedar Woman Studios hosts two workshops at two different North Vancouver locations in 2025. Registration is recommended for the first workshop, but it’s not needed for the second one.
The first event is a cedar mat weaving workshop on Thursday, June 12th. It runs from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Lynn Valley Community Room at 1277 Lynn Valley Road. One week later, so on Thursday, June 19th, there’s the cedar bracelet workshop from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. This event happens at Mahon Park, located at 1601 Forbes Avenue.
Dreamcatcher Workshops (June 16th)
Cheximiya Allison Burns Joseph from the Squamish Nation leads two hands-on workshops on Monday, June 16th. They take place from 4:00 to 5:45 pm, and then from 6:00 to 7:45 pm. Both events happen at Lynn Valley Community Room, located at 1277 Lynn Valley Road.
Participants get to create and take home a dreamcatcher. They also get to learn about what dreamcatchers are and why they are important to the culture.

Self-Guided Indigenous Public Art Tour
One other way to celebrate National Indigenous History Month is to go around town and admire artwork made by Indigenous artists.
