JOEYs is a Canadian-owned premium-casual dining chain restaurant. It has locations in downtown Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam and North Vancouver.

JOEY Restaurants

Headquartered in downtown Vancouver, JOEY is a popular chain of family-owned dining establishments. Founded by Jeff Fuller, whose father and brother started the Earls chain of restaurants, the first JOEY restaurant opened about 30 years ago as “Joey Tomato’s” in Calgary. In 2005 the restaurant’s name changed to just JOEY and it’s been that way ever since.

The restaurant chain has been operating since 1992. Currently there are 30 locations across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Washington and California. Although founded in Alberta, the corporate office is in the Coal Harbour neighbourhood of downtown Vancouver.

The restaurant is similar to other chain dining eateries in the same category in terms of its decor and menu items. JOEY Restaurants themselves are all slightly different based on their location, but all share the same style of decor – mostly black and dark colours with warm accents. It’s quite similar to the Earls restaurant chain, which makes sense considering that the owner of Earls is the brother of the owner of JOEYs.

In Canada, JOEY operates close to 24 locations. Of these, the following five are in the Metro Vancouver area.

JOEY Bentall One – at 507 Burrard Street. This venue serves a primarily business clientele because of its location in Vancouver’s business district. It’s a five-minute walk to Pacific Centre Mall and less than a 10-minute walk to Canada Place and Waterfront Station. The restaurant has an outdoor patio area on the sidewalk in warmer months. It also has a main area for regular use as well as a separate section for private functions (or overflow on especially busy days).
JOEY Burrard – in the core of downtown Vancouver at 820 Burrard Street. (It’s just half a kilometre up the street from the Bentall One location.)
JOEY Burnaby – at 1899 Rosser Avenue, just off Lougheed Highway, by Brentwood Town Centre mall.
JOEY Coquitlam – at 550 Lougheed Highway. This restaurant is close to Highway 1 and about a five-minute drive from the Coquitlam IKEA.
JOEY Shipyards – at 125 Victory Ship Way in the Shipyards District of North Vancouver. It’s close to the Pipe Shop, Seaside Hotel, Shipbuilders’ Pier and the ice skating arena/summer splash pad in Shipyard Commons. (Note: Other really good restaurants in this neighbourhood include The Lobby and Pier 7. If you like pub food, there is also the Tap & Barrel.)

We’ve eaten at JOEY Bentall One and it was excellent. We’ve also been to the JOEY Shipyards location and were impressed.

The restaurant at the North Vancouver location has two levels and a large patio with year-round seating. Even though it was January when we went, the patio was warm and dry because of the fire pits and retractable roof. The restaurant also has an open kitchen so guests can see what the chefs are preparing. There are also spectacular views of downtown Vancouver and the Vancouver Harbour.

Menu options at JOEY’s restaurants are slightly different depending on which location you visit. Most items, however, remain the same regardless of where you go.

The restaurant offers classic chain dining staple dishes including hot wings, burgers, pasta, chicken and steak. We’ve had the Hand Pressed Burger as well as the California Chicken Burger. Both were very tasty. We’ve also attended a private tourism-related event and tried a variety of the catered appetizers (all of which were delicious).

Some unique features of the JOEYs menu include the Asian-inspired dishes. Most chain restaurants have a few ethnic dishes, but JOEY has quite a few options. There is an entire menu section dedicated to sushi as well as other standalone items such as gyoza, Szechuan chicken wraps and ramen (which is a Japanese noodle soup).

JOEY also offers dishes and modifications for those with dietary restrictions. A “V” symbol indicates that a dish is vegetarian and a “G” indicates gluten-free. One of our group members tried the Cauliflower Tacos (the vegetarian version of the Baja Fish Tacos) and said they tasted just as good as the version with meat.

Happy Hour Deals

Similar to the regular menu items, Happy Hour discounts and hours vary depending on the location. At the JOEY Shipyards location Happy Hour runs from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily, from 9:00 pm until close Sunday through Thursday and from 10:00 pm to close on Friday and Saturday.

Happy Hour deals at the JOEY Shipyards location include discounts on both food and drinks. Food ranges in price from $5 for yam fries up to $25 for steak frites. Happy Hour drink deals include wine, beer and mixed drinks ranging in price from $5 up to around $9.
