Opening in 2026, one of Grouse Mountain‘s newest summer attractions is a gravity-powered coaster that sends riders careening down the mountainside.
Cypress Mountain has already had its own Eagle Coaster for a couple of years now. One day Grouse will have something similar of its own. As part of its summer expansion, Grouse also developed a mountain bike terrain park too.
Grouse Mountain’s Coaster Ride
Grouse Mountain is one of the premier attractions on the North Shore. There is plenty to do at the mountain throughout the year, and something new on the horizon is the Grouse Mountain Coaster.
Currently under construction, the coaster is very similar to the Cypress Eagle Coaster over on neighbouring Cypress Mountain. Grouse’s planned coaster is a 1.4 km long track where people ride in small carts down the mountain. There’s no engine or other power involved. The carts roll down the track entirely through the power of gravity!
When Will It Open?
The coaster was scheduled to open in the spring last year, and then the summer, but it kept getting delayed. The plan now is for it to open on Wednesday, May 20th.
The coaster isn’t the only new attraction opening on the mountain! Grouse unveiled its new Mountain Bike Park in 2025. The bike park is accessed by a chairlift and features a series of forested trails to explore.
How Much Does the Grouse Coaster Cost?
Admission costs $29 for a single ride for one person, or $41 for two passengers on the same trip. If you want to ride it twice in the same day, a two-ride ticket costs $42 for one person or $57 for two people. (For comparison, the Cypress Eagle Coaster costs about $35 for one ride or $53 for two rides.)
Note: The above prices don’t include admission to the resort (which costs about an extra $89 for adults). Also, for rides with two passengers, the combined weight of both people can’t exceed $140 kg or 310 pounds).
To save money, if you hike up via the Grouse Grind (which is a grueling climb), and you want to take the gondola back down, you can get a Download Ticket Bundle for $39, which includes just one ride on the coaster. Alternatively, you can get a Sunset Ticket Bundle for $49 per person which includes a single ride, but also lift ticket both up and down the hill from the parking lot base, but only for admission after 6:00 pm.
What to Expect
The Grouse Mountain Coaster will drop over 90 metres in elevation over the course of its nearly 1.5 km track. The carts are built for just one or two people. Adults can ride solo or with a child as a passenger. Two adults can’t ride in the same cart.
Riders have the ability to control exactly how fast they go by using a braking system on the cart. Don’t brake at all and the cart can fly down the track at up to 45 km an hour! Use the brake the whole time and the cart can go as slow as a crawl. (Don’t do that though, you don’t want to slow up the line of people waiting for their turn!)
The cart is pulled back up to the starting position using an automated system once it reaches the bottom. Riders don’t have to do anything once they get to that point. Just enjoy the steady climb up past some great mountain views!
Important Things to Know
The following are important things to know before you buy your tickets and head up to Grouse if you want to go on the ride.
First, if you want to go on the coaster, you and/or your kids have to be at least 3 years of age. Also, kids under the age of 9 can’t go on the ride by themselves. They have to ride with an adult aged 16+.
Another requirement for riding the coaster is that you have to be at least 132 cm tall (i.e., 4 foot 4 inches). Riders also have to be less than 140 kg (or 310 lbs) in weight. As well, you have to have appropriate footwear. You can’t go on the ride if you are wearing open-toed shoes or sandals, nor very high-heeled shoes likely either. And finally, the ride is not recommended for pregnant women or people with back or neck issues.
More Activities at Grouse Mountain
There is plenty to enjoy at Grouse Mountain during the summer. The Grouse Grind is great for those who want to get some exercise in before taking a coaster ride as a fun reward. The Skyride gondola is a similarly great (and much less tiring) way to get up to the top of the mountain.
Other activities on Grouse include Ziplines, ropes courses, plenty of hikes, lumberjack and bird shows, and even outdoor movie screenings!
