Vancouver Canucks Hockey in 2021

Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks are the professional NHL ice hockey team that plays home games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Below is their 2021 spring schedule.

Because of delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the 2019-2020 NHL season ended in late September, which was about three months later than usual. The current regular season began on January 13, 2021. However, it is unlikely that fans will be able to attend any Canucks games at Rogers Arena this season.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Near the end of March 2021, a number of Canucks players and staff members were added to the team’s COVID-19 protocol list. Games that were scheduled to take place between March 31st and April 17th were postponed.

After most of the team was declared healthy to play, the Canucks returned to action on April 18th. The exact dates and details for the remainder of Canucks games this season have been modified but the team is still scheduled to complete all 56 games.

Vancouver Canucks 2021 Schedule

Vancouver Canucks hockey games in 2021 are taking place exclusively in Canada because of the coronavirus pandemic. Home games are to be played in Rogers Arena, and away games are played in other Canadian cities. Fans likely won’t be able to attend any games this season, but local sports bars and restaurants will no doubt be showing most of the games (at least when they are allowed to offer indoor dining service).

Canucks 2020-21 Season Summary

The 2020-21 season has been miserable for both the Canucks and their fans. Coming off a surprising playoff run last year, many expected the team to take another step. Those plans were unfortunately derailed by a slew of internal challenges and the COVID outbreak.

The Canucks had many vital players become unrestricted free agents before the start of the 2020/21 season. That included goalie Jacob Markstrom (2020’s team MVP) and Tyler Toffoli. Although the team wanted to keep both players, they decided to sign with other Canadian clubs instead.

Thatcher Demko has thankfully been a revelation in 2021 to replace Markstrom in net, but Toffoli’s absence has been greatly felt. The Canucks decided to overpay Jake Virtanen and Tanner Pearson to try and replace Toffoli and neither has come close to doing so.

The controversy surrounding the Canucks led to them underperforming on the ice. And just when they were starting to turn things around, the COVID outbreak happened. Almost the entire team contracted the virus and many players passed it on to their families too. It was the most serious COVID outbreak that any North American sports team has had to deal with this year.

To make things worse, the NHL decided that the Canucks needed to play all their remaining games for revenue purposes even after many of their matches were cancelled due to COVID. This meant that the team has had a compressed schedule in an already shortened season.

The Canucks have unsurprisingly experienced an uptick in injuries and struggled after returning to the ice since many players are still feeling the effects of the virus.

It’s safe to say that this has been a lost season for the Canucks, and we can only hope for a bounceback next year.

Other Information

Vancouver’s other main hockey team is the Vancouver Giants, who are in a lower league than the Canucks. They play at the Langley Events Centre and their games are also exciting to watch, and cheaper.
