Fort Langley Tours offers educational walks throughout the Village of Fort Langley. The company started in 2023 and provides wonderful ways to explore the neighbourhood and learn about the area’s interesting history. The village has transformed a lot over the years.

Guided walking tours are led by Deanna, a local woman with years of experience as a tour guide and lots of knowledge about the town. Fort Langley Tours also offers self-guided audio tours to do at your own pace whenever you wish.

The guided walking tours by Fort Langley Tours are interactive experiences. Participants are led to some of Fort Langley’s most important buildings and hidden gems. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, you’ll learn a lot about the history of the village. The tours are also great ways to meet other people interested in history, and there are nice photo opportunities as well.

During the 2023 summer season, the Fort Langley Walking Tour ran on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As of January 2024, it takes place just on Wednesdays. That’s because the company has a newer tour – The Dark Side of Fort Langley which happens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Both tours begin late in the afternoon, at 6:00 pm, at Bedford Landing, which is located at 9271 Glover Road. The starting point is actually by the river just off Billy Brown Road on the west (back) side of the Fort Pub & Grill (so not actually on Glover Road).

The Fort Langley Walking Tour takes between about 75 and 90 minutes to complete and it’s suitable for people of all ages, but especially for adults and older children. This tour features information about everything from the area’s first explorers and the gold rush, to prohibition and what to see now. The Dark Side of Fort Langley, meanwhile, has more mature content and is only recommended for folks ages 16 and older. This second tour also has a darker theme and focuses on things like crime, murders and other elements of Fort Langley’s darker, more sinister past.

Self-Guided Audio Tours

For tech-savvy walkers, Fort Langley Tours also offers a self-guided experience on its mobile app. The virtual tour can be done any time you’re in the area with a mobile device. As you approach specific parts of the village during the self-guided tour, you’ll hear audio clips describing what the place was like in the past, and why it’s an attraction today.

The mobile application is free to download. To access the tour, however, costs $12.99. The audio clips play automatically as you get close to landmarks, but you can pause or skip forward at any time. Of course, nothing compares to an in-person tour with a personable and knowledgeable guide. If you just plan to walk around town on your own, however, learning about the area with the audio tour as you go is a great way to explore.

About the Tour Guide

The company’s main tour guide is Deanna. She moved to Vancouver at the age of 19 and studied geology at Simon Fraser University. However, after realizing she likes history and working with people, she became a Rocky Mountaineer tour guide and gained experience in the tourism industry. Deanna is a well-travelled individual who loves sharing her knowledge with interested tourists. She is now a Fort Langley local ready to show off the town and its rich history.

Tips & Suggestions

TIP #1: The tours take place outdoors, rain or shine. Be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly.

TIP #2: The tours go at a comfortable pace. Make sure though to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you wear high heels, after an hour or more of walking, you might regret not wearing sneakers.

TIP #3: It’s best to arrive at least 15 minutes early for the guided walking tours. No refunds are given to latecomers, and you won’t want to miss anything anyways!

TIP #4: The self-guided tours are available on both the Apple and Google app stores. What’s nice is you can download the audio tours while in a Wi-Fi zone, and then access them offline in Fort Langley. There’s no need to use mobile data, which is awesome for tourists.

TIP #5: The village of Fort Langley is an interesting place to visit, but especially so on days when there are special events. One of the region’s biggest and best events is the Odlum Brown Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festivals which takes place in the summer. There are other festivals and events at other times of the year too, including Vive les Voyageurs and the Fort Langley Historic Half Marathon in late winter, and the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival in autumn.

As you’ll see in the video, Deanna leads her guests all around the village. The group starts near the edge of the Fraser River behind the Fort Pub. From there the group heads to the train station, to the walls of the historic fort, to a church and then past shops and the community hall. The tour ends about 75 minutes later at the Fort Langley cemetery. Along the way, everyone learns lots about the history of Fort Langley!
