Black Friday takes place on November 26th in 2021. It’s the day after American Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas shopping season.
Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday when even more things go on sale online.
This article includes information about places to find Black Friday deals. It also describes what we expected in 2020 and how to stay safe.
Black Friday in 2020
The Christmas shopping season was different in 2020 compared to previous years. Because of COVID-19, many retailers started their sales early, and in many cases continued their deals for longer than usual, as a way to spread out the holiday crowds. Fewer people did in-person shopping too, and those that did had to wear masks and stand in lineups for longer than usual as they waited their turns to enter stores.
More people than usual shopped online this past year. That made sense, given the state of the world at the time.
When shopping, please don’t forget to support small local businesses too. Giant online retailers have been doing well during the pandemic. Small local businesses, on the other hand, have been struggling. Shop local and support small independent businesses as much possible!
Black Friday Shopping in Metro Vancouver
As most people know (unless you’re new to the continent), Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving which is the fourth Thursday in November. The day marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season. Numerous malls and retailers offer special sales to entice shoppers and to commemorate the occasion.
Below are some of the shopping malls and retail outlets around Metro Vancouver that offer Black Friday most years. (Note: Store hours and other details are subject to change.)
Pacific Centre in Downtown Vancouver
A large mall with high-end stores in downtown Vancouver is Pacific Centre. It’s located in the middle of Robson Street, Granville Street, Howe and West Pender. Brand-name retailers at the mall include Abercrombie & Fitch, American Outfitters, Banana Republic, Club Monaca, Holt Renfrew, La Vie en Rose, Lululemon, Nordstrom, The Body Shop and dozens of others.
To learn more about the venue see our Pacific Centre article.
Tsawwassen Mills Mall in Delta
Located in Delta close to the ferry terminal, Tsawwassen Mills is a large outlet shopping mall. The place has over 200 stores and restaurants as well as other activities like a VR experience centre and a bowling alley.
Many stores within the mall offer deals for Black Friday, including a few up to 70% off. Click Tsawwassen Mills Mall to learn more about the shopping centre in general.
McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Richmond
Designed like a European shopping street, McArthurGlen is a large outlet mall near the Vancouver Airport (which is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver). Stores at McArthurGlen include designer places such as Jimmy Choo and Coach as well as less fancy outlets like Old Navy.
McArthurGlen usually extends their shopping hours for the week of Black Friday. Instead of being open from just 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, the mall was open on November 27th in 2020 from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm. For more information about the mall in regular times click McArthur Glen Outlet Mall.
Guildford Town Centre in Surrey
Guildford Town Centre is one of the largest malls in the Metro Vancouver area. It has over 200 shops and restaurants as well as a movie theatre on-site.
Most (but not all) stores in Guildford Town Centre were offering some kind of sale for Black Friday in 2020. The sales also ran all weekend, so from Black Friday until Cyber Monday, but in some cases for even longer. See our article about Guildford Town Centre for more details about the mall.
BE SAFE AND BE RESPONSIBLE!
Black Friday in 2020 looked different than in other years. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, folk were advised by health authorities to stay home and avoid non-essential travel. If choosing to go out and do some shopping, people had to remember to stay safe, wear a mask and socially distance from other shoppers.
Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver
The North Shore’s Park Royal Shopping Centre is one of the oldest and biggest malls in Metro Vancouver. The place has over 200 stores and restaurants, as well as a Cineplex movie theatre. Folk can choose to shop at one (or all three) of the mall’s sections: Park Royal North, Park Royal South or the Village.
In 2020 the mall operated at reduced hours due to COVID-19. Black Friday shoppers visited the mall from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm Monday through Saturday, or from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm on Sundays and holidays. Click Park Royal Mall for more information about the venue.
Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby
Metrotown is Vancouver’s largest shopping mall. With over 400 stores and restaurants as well as a movie theatre, the mall has something for every shopper. Metrotown usually has a good selection of deals and discounts for Black Friday. The place can also get insanely busy on the main sale day.
Metrotown was open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm daily in 2020, including on Black Friday. For more details about the mall see our article about Metropolis at Metrotown.
Other Shopping Centres
Other malls in Metro Vancouver include Lansdowne Centre and Aberdeen Centre in Richmond and Central City in Surrey. There won’t be so many deals at places like these during Black Friday week, but there should still be some (especially at the big box anchor stores).
Coquitlam Centre is another big mall that can get busy during the pre-Christmas season (and its Hudson’s Bay store closed temporarily, but has since reopened). The Bay downtown is a popular place to shop too, as is MEC at its various locations for people who like the outdoors.
In addition to the places listed above, some other shopping destinations in the Lower Mainland include Lonsdale Quay and Granville Island. While not known for their Black Friday deals, these are great places for shopping in general and finding unique gifts. They are also full of small locally-owned businesses, which are important to support.
BLACK FRIDAY TIPS
If you do in-person shopping during the ongoing pandemic, be sure to wear a mask and keep your distance from other people. Also, don’t go at peak times (like on the Friday itself, and especially not first thing that morning). Most of the sales go on for a week, so in most cases there is no need to hurry!
In some cases, in previous years, we’ve noticed that some retailers actually offer better deals the week before, like 50% off everything prior to the date of American Thanksgiving and then just 40% or so off during their Black Friday sales. So shop wisely and don’t be fooled by gimmicks! There are definitely great deals to be had. Not everything with a sale sign on it though is at its lowest price of the season!
And finally, now more than ever, it’s important to support local businesses. There are lots of great online sales, and likely more than ever this year. When and where you can though, try to buy and support local! Small businesses don’t normally offer big Black Friday deals. They do though have a big impact on the wellbeing of local communities!
