Granville Island Public Market

Located in the heart of Granville Island, the Granville Island Public Market is Vancouver’s most famous place to buy fruit, vegetables and a range of other market goods.

Vancouver’s Granville Island Public Market

Built in 1979, the market is one of Vancouver’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s a great place to buy high-quality fresh produce, as well as other tasty food products. The market is a fascinating place and well worth checking out!

Types of food available for purchase at the Granville Island Public Market include ethnic foods, fresh produce, gourmet cheeses, butcher shop-style meats, fresh seafood, exotic spices and more. There are also baked goods, chocolates, pizzas, fish and chips, burritos, salads, ice cream and other delicious snacks and meals that are ready-to-eat.

The Public Market is interesting any time of year. It’s usually open seven days a week from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm (but closed on Mondays in January). The venue is all indoors, so a good place to visit regardless of the weather. Outside the market, by the waterfront, there are picnic tables and benches to sit at. In the surrounding area there are also shops, artisan studios, art galleries, theatre venues and restaurants. The views of the city from across the water are spectacular!

There is a lot to do and see on Granville Island, so combine a trip to the market with a visit to one of the island’s theatres or restaurants, or a walk along the False Creek Seawall.

Public Market Video

Below is a video that will give you a good idea of what to expect during a visit to the Granville Island Public Market.

In the video you’ll notice colourful fruits like pomegranates and berries, along with a nice selection of gourmet cheeses and other fresh produce. In addition, folks can buy prepared food and snacks from various shops.

The following video highlights the food court area that’s full of great take-out options in the same building as the fresh produce and other market product vendors. In the food court area there are pastries, ethnic dishes, a juice and salad bar, and much more that visitors can enjoy either indoors or outdoors depending on the weather. Granville Island Farmers Market

Not to be confused with the indoor Public Market, which runs daily and year-round, on Thursdays from early June until late September there is the weekly Granville Island Farmers Market.

The Farmers Market used to take place in the square right outside the Granville Island Public Market. As of 2019, however, its home is the Chain & Forge which is a new public space under the bridge near The Keg.

It’s a small farmers market, but a nice addition to what’s already in the area. Hours of operation are from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.

Tips & Advice

Below are some tips and advice to help you make the most of your visit to Granville Island and the Granville Island Public Market.

TIP #1: The market is full of exceptional shops selling all kinds of exotic foods and tasty treats. If you like donuts, then the place to go is Lee’s Donuts. People come from all over the Lower Mainland to pick up a box. If you buy just one, at about $2.50, it’s not inexpensive. If you are a donut connoisseur though, it’s worth it! At less than $14 (as of the last time we checked), it’s best to go all out and buy a full dozen! Your friends and family will thank you!

TIP #2: Granville Island isn’t close to a SkyTrain Station, but it is accessible by other interesting forms of transportation. The False Creek Seawall runs right by it, so the area is a great place to walk and cycle to. Mini Harbour Ferries also make regular stops at Granville Island. Lots of people also travel to the area by public bus.

TIP #3: Be careful when eating market food outside. Some of the baked goods are so tasty that seagulls will occasionally swoop down and steal your meal if you aren’t careful. We know this from experience!

TIP #4: If you like theatre, especially comedy, be sure to check out the shows at The Improv Centre. Theatresports-style shows take place most evenings from Wednesday to Sunday.
