National Indigenous History Month Activities in North Vancouver
The month of June is a time to honour and celebrate Indigenous culture. Numerous events take place across the Lower Mainland, especially on and around National Indigenous Peoples Day. In 2026, National Indigenous Peoples Day is on June 21st.
The North Vancouver activities have often taken place throughout the entire month. In past years, North Vancouver Recreation & Culture hosted a range of Indigenous-focused workshops, experiences, and self-guided activities. Comparable events are expected to return in 2026, but official information has not yet been confirmed.
Workshops and Activities
In previous years, North Vancouver Recreation & Culture offered several free workshops during June. These events highlighted Indigenous arts, movement, and cultural practices. There was also a self-guided public art tour featuring Indigenous artists.
The following examples are from 2025’s programming and are provided as a reference for what may return in 2026.
Pow Wow Zumba
Pow Wow Zumba was previously offered as an outdoor dance workout led by an instructor with Cree and Métis heritage. Participants learned a mix of traditional and contemporary movements in a welcoming group setting.
This type of activity may return as part of future National Indigenous History Month programming. In 2025, it happened on Thursday, June 5th, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on the grass field at Seylynn Park.

Coast Salish Wool Weaving Workshop
Coast Salish wool weaving workshops invited participants to create small woven pieces while learning about the cultural significance of the craft. Sessions were led by Indigenous artists and focused on hands-on learning.
Similar weaving workshops are expected to be offered again in 2026. Last year, it took place on June 5th, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Lynn Creek Community Recreation Centre.
For full details and to register, visit the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture website.
Red Cedar Woman Weaving Workshops
2025 programming also included cedar weaving workshops hosted by Red Cedar Woman Studios. These sessions took place at different community locations and explored traditional weaving techniques using cedar materials.
The first event happened on Thursday, June 12th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Lynn Valley Community Room, 1277 Lynn Valley Road. One week later, the second event took place on Thursday, June 19th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Mahon Park, located at 1601 Forbes Avenue.
If the workshops return in 2026, registration requirements may vary by session.

Dreamcatcher Workshops
In 2025, a Squamish Nation artist and educator previously led dreamcatcher workshops. Participants created their own dreamcatchers and learned about their cultural meaning and history.
The event took place on Monday, June 16th, from 4:00 pm to 5:45 pm, and then from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm. Both events happened at the Lynn Valley Community Room.
Comparable hands-on cultural workshops may be part of future June programming.

This self-guided experience remains available year-round. For details, see the NVRC Public Art Collection.
