Carousel Theatre for Young People is a Granville Island-based company that puts on high-quality, family-friendly plays. They also host kids camps and workshops.

During the winter holiday season in 2024, Carousel Theatre presents the Kaleidoscope Theatre production of The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe. It runs from December 4th to 15th at Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island. Kaleidoscope Theatre is a theatre company from Victoria, BC. Their inventive and highly theatrical adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s classic promises to be a treat for people of all ages.

Granville Island’s Carousel Theatre

Granville Island is home to a number of theatre companies. One of them is Carousel Theatre for Young People which specializes in plays geared towards children and their parents.

Carousel Theatre is located at 1411 Cartwright Street in Vancouver. It’s directly across the street from Waterfront Theatre which is part of the Granville Island Theatre District.

Carousel Theatre’s 2024-25 season kicks off with a production of The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe. It’s an abridged adaption of the famous novel by C.S. Lewis. The show runs from December 4th to 15th, 2024, at Waterfront Theatre.

The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe 2024 Production

Carousel Theatre’s production of The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe is suitable for everyone ages 5 and up.

It’s a classic story about the fantasy kingdom of Narnia which has been trapped in an eternal winter by the evil White Witch. Hope arises when four siblings from our world stumble into Narnia through an old wardrobe. They must team up with Aslan the lion and other magical creatures to defeat the White Witch and bring happiness (and Christmas) back to Narnia.

While there are shows at Waterfront Theatre from December 4th to 15th, nearly all of the weekdays only have matinees for school field trips. There are shows open to the general public on Friday, December 6th, as well as the Saturdays and Sundays of December 7th & 8th and 14th & 15th. Below are the exact times for each performance.

  • Friday, December 6th – 7:00 pm
  • Saturday, December 7th – 10:00 am and 12:30 pm
  • Sunday, December 8th – 1:30 pm and 4:00 pm
  • Saturday, December 14th – 10:00 am and 12:30 pm
  • Sunday, December 15th – 10:00 am and 1:30 pm

Tickets cost about $30 for adults, $26 for seniors and students, and $19 for those under the age of 18. The play runs for just 45 minutes, making it a good one for kids who might not want to sit through a multi-hour long production.

The 2024-25 Season

The 2024-25 Carousel Theatre season features four shows that run between December and May. Each of them is listed below with their relevant dates and links to further details.

  • The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe – the holiday show tells the fantastical story of four siblings who find themselves in a magical kingdom under the spell of an evil witch. December 4th to 15th, 2024, at Waterfront Theatre. (45 minutes).
  • The Screamer (Le Criard) – a girl needs to let loose a scream, but there’s almost nowhere where that’s allowed. This show features poetry, a drum set and just two actors. February 17th to 23rd, 2025, at Carousel Theatre Studio A. (35 minutes).
  • The Sissy Duckling – based on the children’s book by Harvey Fierstein, Elmer is a duckling that’s a bit different from the others, and he shows those who make fun of him that that’s perfectly fine. March 12th to 16th at Waterfront Theatre. (50 minutes).
  • Stuart Little – an adaptation of the E. B. White classic, this show is the story of a mouse who tries to make his way through a world that’s quite big for him. April 23rd to May 11th, 2025, at Waterfront Theatre. (60 minutes).

 

About Carousel Theatre

Carousel Theatre began in 1976 with the goal of enriching the lives of children and their families through accessible, engaging theatre. The non-profit company offers a series of shows each year that give the chance for young kids to experience live theatre that’s created with them in mind.

Carousel also offers various workshops and camps for children throughout the year. For the 2024-25 school year the company’s Drama School runs theatre day camps on every Pro-D Day for children ages 7 to 11. There are also Spring Break Camps in March 2025 that provide a longer experience.
