Halloween in Vancouver

Highlights of the Halloween season in the Lower Mainland include Maan Farm’s Haunted Mazes for older folk in Abbotsford at night, and the kid-friendly Pumpkin Patch & Autumn Activities at the same venue during the day. They both start up in September, as does HowlOver Canada at FlyOver Canada.

Halloween Walking Tours

An interesting and entertaining way to enjoy the Halloween season is by taking a guided tour. There are some great walking tours to choose from, including the following:

  • Forbidden Vancouver Walking Tours – a selection of exceptional and highly recommended guided tours. A perfect choice for Halloween is their Lost Souls of Gastown Tour.
    • Lost Souls of Gastown features true stories about Gastown’s gruesome history, including about smallpox, fire and murder. The tours are great for Halloween and start at the corner of Water and Cordova Streets, beside Monaco Cafe.
  • Grave Tales in Fort Langley – Fort Langley National Historic Site hosts spooky walking tours during the Halloween season. Last year, there were adult tours and tours for kids between October 13th and 29th. The tours go around the town and into the local cemetery. Halloween Boat Parties

Arguably even more fun than a party at a regular night club is a dance party on a boat off the coast of Vancouver. Below are a couple of cruising opportunities hosted by Vancouver Boat Parties most years.

There were three Halloween-themed boat parties that happened on Saturday, October 28th in 2023. One took place on the Burrard Queen and the other two were held jointly on the Magic Spirit Yacht. All three parties ran from 8:00 pm until midnight.

For full details about the three events click on the following:

Halloween-Themed Movies & Theatre

Because of the Halloween season, October is the perfect month to see horror movies (assuming you like that sort of thing). It’s also a great time to see kid-friendly Halloween-themed movies too. Below are some of the film opportunities to consider.

  • FlyOver Canada at Halloween – Vancouver’s multi-dimensional flying experience film at Canada Place had a wonderful, family-friendly Halloween theme every day in October last year. In the show you got to fly with witches and it was suitable for all ages (i.e. in no way was it a horror film).
  • Vancouver Horror Show Film Festival – horror films with in-person screenings take place over a couple of weekends in October. In 2023 the festival ran from October 13th to 15th in Vancouver and from October 20th to 22nd at Metrotown in Burnaby.
  • Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror – the 1922 classic shows at the Orpheum Theatre as part of Vancouver Civic Theatre‘s Silent Movie Mondays series were on Monday, October 16th last year.

Halloween Trains

The Lower Mainland is home to a couple of miniature train attractions that go all out at Halloween. Both offer fairly tame tours for little kids in the afternoons and early evenings, but then really ramp things up for youth and young adults at night.

  • Bear Creek Halloween Train – child-friendly Halloween Pumpkin Express miniature train rides in Surrey usually run from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm every day in October. The cost in 2023 was about $11.50. The Haunted Forest Scream Train is at the same place and cost about $6 more. Last year, it ran from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm but only started on October 13th.
  • Stanley Park Ghost Train – family-friendly miniature train rides with a Halloween theme. In 2019 the train ran every day from October 11th until Halloween on October 31st. It was cancelled in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Hopefully it will run again one day!

THE CIRCUS IS COMING!

Last year, the Circo Osorio Circus played at Coquitlam Centre between October 19th and October 30th. The circus isn’t a Halloween event, obviously, but it did have shows in the month of October. It’s also a fabulous, family-friendly and very affordable event. An adult and two younger children could get in for less than $30!

See the American Crown Circus website or our article about Circo Osorio to learn more.
