This Weekend in Vancouver

Highlights of the weekend of April 26th to 28th include the NACAC International Universities Fair, Dutch King’s Day and Coquitlam Community Fest. There is also The Sky’s No Limit & Girls Fly Too and Party for the Planet, plus baseball games with the Vancouver Canadians.

For folks who like farms and flowers, there is the Harrison Tulip Festival, Abbotsford Tulip Festival, Botanica Tulip Festival and Sweet Spring at Greendale Acres in the Fraser Valley.

Also this weekend, there are live comedy shows at The Improv Centre on Granville Island, outdoor adventure games with Vancouver Mysteries, walking tours with Forbidden Vancouver, and indoor virtual reality games at Zero Latency.

Friday, April 26th, 2024

  • Pro-D Day – today is a professional development day for children in some school districts (including in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison and New Westminster).
  • Harrison Tulip Festivalan amazing flower festival featuring 10 million tulip bulbs and stunning mountain views in Agassiz (which is near the beautiful resort town of Harrison Hot Springs).
  • Sweet Spring at Greendale Acres – a family-friendly spring flower festival with baby farm animals and tons of activities for children in Chilliwack. (TIP: Today also features Grandparents Day. Normally seniors ages 75+ get free admission. Today, however, grandparents of all ages get in for free.)
  • Botanica Tulip Festival – a flower festival that’s carbon neutral and features 1.5 million tulips over the course of the season in Chilliwack. (It also has a Ferris Wheel that runs Tuesdays to Sundays.)
  • Abbotsford Tulip Festival – one of the largest displays of tulips in Canada at Lakeland Flowers. Today there is live music with Ryan McAllister.
  • Vancouver Canadians Baseball – the team plays against Spokane at Nat Bailey Stadium.
  • FlyOver Canada – a multi-dimensional flying theatre experience at Canada Place. In addition to the show about Canada, a second film is Windborne: Call of the Canadian Rockies which showcases Banff, Jasper and Yoho national parks.
  • Richmond Night Market – Vancouver’s famous weekend Asian market at 8351 River Road in Richmond.
  • Lower Mainland Parks – if good weather, various parks and places in nature are “best places” to be!

Saturday, April 27th, 2024

  • NACAC International Universities Fair – an event for anyone wanting to learn about post-secondary educational opportunities at over 100 universities from around the world. It takes place at the Vancouver Convention Centre and admission is free for students and their families.
  • Koningsdag: King’s Day Extravaganza – an event celebrating the Dutch king’s birthday at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. There are free activities during the day and a ticketed event in the evening. (Note: Pretty much everything is indoors or under shelter (in Shipyard Commons), so it’s a great event regardless of the weather.)
  • Coquitlam Community Fest – an annual event at Town Centre Park with food trucks, live music, artisan vendors and more.
  • Earth Day Events – although Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, Earth Day-related events happen today in Surrey and Vancouver’s Everett Crowley Park.
  • Vancouver Opera – Carmen by Bizet shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
  • The Sky’s No Limit & Girls Fly Too! – an aerospace, aviation, defense and marine industry event at the Abbotsford Airport. Activities include going up in a plane (for female first-time fliers). Admission is free.
  • Vancouver Canadians Baseball – the team plays against Spokane at Nat Bailey Stadium.
  • Orpheum Tours – guided tours of Vancouver’s beautiful theatre take place today.
  • Party for the Planet – Earth Day celebrations in Surrey that include free concerts and other live entertainment.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Highlights of the weekend of May 3rd to 5th include May the Fourth Star Wars-themed events and Cinco de May Mexican-themed celebrations. The Royal Canadian International Circus is also in town.

Other events next weekend include the Fort Langley Jazz Festival‘s Tribute to Motown, Search for the Perfect Pint in Port Moody, and Chilliwack Party in the Park in the Fraser Valley. There is also the West Coast Wedding Show in Burnaby, an EnChor Choir Concert in Vancouver, and special events at Pacific Arts Market on West Broadway.

More fun activities this time of year include outdoor games with Vancouver Mysteries, walking tours with Forbidden Vancouver, live comedy at The Improv Centre, and virtual reality games at Zero Latency in both Vancouver and Langley. There are also ropes course adventures at WildPlay Element Park in Maple Ridge. Weather permitting, there might also still be flower festivals in Agassiz/Harrison, Abbotsford and Chilliwack in the Fraser Valley as well as Sweet Spring at Greendale Acres.
