Steveston Village celebrates the start of the holiday season in December with Christmas tree decorations at the Cannery, classic cars and Santa Claus.
Christmas in Steveston Village
On that day a car rally is in town and Santa Claus arrives by boat at the wharf. There’s also a winter market, decorated Christmas trees and free admission at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
Christmas Classic Car Cruise
The Christmas Classic Car Cruise takes place in Steveston Village on Sunday, December 1st, from 12:15 until 2:30 pm.
The procession of cars makes its way through town starting shortly after 12 o’clock and the cars then remain on display for a while in the parking lot of the Steveston Hotel at 12111 Third Avenue (so right by the Cannery).
The event is a fundraiser for the Richmond Christmas Fund. It’s free for the public and donations of both money and toys are greatly appreciated. In all there are usually up to around three dozen cars ranging from convertible MGs to vintage trucks.
Arrival of Santa Claus
Santa arrives on a whale-watching boat at the wharf in Steveston Village. He then walks (with police escort most years) along the waterfront to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery where he hangs out for a couple of hours for photos with children.
Santa’s arrival time at the wharf is at 1:00 pm and he’s usually greeted by a small crowd.
Cannery Farmers’ Market
The Cannery Farmers’ Market takes place every couple of weeks most months from late October until April each year, but on all three of the first three Sundays in December, including on December 1st in 2019.
The market’s home is the Gulf of Georgia Cannery which is a national historic site located at 12138 Fourth Avenue in the heart of Steveston Village. Market activities go from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm and during that time admission to the Cannery is free for everyone (whereas normally it’s free only for children ages 17 and under).
The Cannery Farmers’ Market is a winter artisan market that typically features 30 or so vendors selling everything from fresh produce to coffee, art and clothing. The market on the first Sunday of December is usually extra-large and a perfect time to pick up handmade soaps, Christmas cards, candles, crafts and other stocking stuffers and special gifts.

Festival of Trees
The Christmas at the Cannery “Festival of Trees” is a display of Christmas trees at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery during the entire month of December. Local merchants and community organizations each adopt and decorate a tree.
The Festival of Trees runs every day except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day between December 1st and 31st. The decorated trees are pretty and make the Gulf of Georgia Cannery look nice and festive.
