Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble

The Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble have been performing together since the late 1980s. At the time, they were the first professional Chinese music organization in the country!

The group now consists of about ten different musicians. They are masters of traditional instruments including Chinese flutes, guitars, banjos and lute.

The Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble puts on a variety of performances and events, sharing ancient melodies passed down through generations as well as developing new music for traditional Chinese instruments. In fact, they have even been on international tours, bridging cultures all over the world. The ensemble also performs at local events in Metro Vancouver.

For tickets and full details about the workshop, see the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble‘s website.

Chinese Music Instrumental Garden

The Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble hosts a free Chinese Music Instrumental Garden event in the spring of 2025.

It’s a musical adventure featuring special guest Ginalina. Attendees get to learn about different Chinese instruments, including the Erhu (violin), Guzheng (zither), Sheng (pipe organ) and more. Guests can even try playing some of the instruments themselves.

This family-friendly event is fun for all ages. It runs from 12:30 to 2:30 pm on Saturday, June 14th. The activities are held in Room B of the Roundhouse Community Centre, located at 181 Roundhouse Mews in Yaletown.

To register for this free event, e-mail vancouverchinesemusicensemble@gmail.com or see the Chinese Music Ensemble‘s website for more information.

Previous Concerts

The Jasmine Jazz concert took place at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 25th, 2025.

It was a unique and award-winning performance. Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble performers were joined by the Jodi Proznick Trio. The two groups blended jazz music with Chinese instruments.

One highlight of the show was the Vancouver premiere of Breath of Joy, which is a composition by Bill Coon that bridges traditional music with contemporary improvisation.

Prices for the concert were on a “sliding scale” meaning that it was “pay what you can” (with a minimum amount). Tickets cost between $15 and $25 per person.
