Abbotsford Agrifair

Abbotsford Agrifair Amusement Rides

The Abbotsford Agrifair is an agricultural fair that usually features amusement rides, 4-H shows, live music and other activities at Exhibition Park in August.

DRIVE THRU SAFARI IN 2020!

In 2020 the fair celebrated its 120th year on the weekend of July 31 to August 2. Unlike most festivals and major events in the Lower Mainland, the Abbotsford Agrifair wasn’t cancelled due to COVID-19. It didn’t just go online either. The Agrifair still took place, and in a live format! In 2020 it celebrated with “A Drive Thru Safari” theme!

This past year you could take your family to the Agrifair in your car and drive around the venue. If you went you would have seen farm animals, tractors, displays of military equipment, dinosaurs and even a logger show! You would also have been able to enjoy festival foods at the drive-thru food truck area, and see a demolition derby car display! It was lots of fun – almost just like the regular fair – but enjoyed from the comfort and safety of your car!

Admission in 2020 was just $15 per carload. You had to buy your ticket online for a pre-set time. Tours lasted for approximately 20 minutes.

On each day of the fair there was a drive-thru food truck area. Food trucks were also on site on Thursday, July 30th, from 1:00 until 8:00 pm, for people wanting to go for just the food.

For more details about the event in the summer see the Abbotsford Agrifair website.

Agricultural Fair in Abbotsford

Billing itself as the “biggest little country fair since 1911,” the Abbotsford Agrifair is an annual event in the Fraser Valley which is one of, if not the, most important farming regions in the Lower Mainland.

Abbotsford is in the heart of farm country and the event is a major community affair. Vancouver’s Best Places is a proud media sponsor of the event.

2020 Drive-Thru Food Truck Video

The Abbotsford Agrifair has had a couple of food truck-related events in 2020. On the Father’s Day Weekend they hosted a Mini Donut Drive Thru which we attended and really enjoyed. On the BC Day Long Weekend, when the events hosted its Drive Thru Safari, there were again food trucks, but this time serving a wide selection of tasty festival foods.

The Drive Thru Safari in 2020 ran from July 31st until August 2nd. The Drive Thru Food Truck ran for an extra day though, on Thursday, July 30th, from 1:00 until 8:00 pm.

For an idea of what to expect at the drive thru food events, check out the following video (which we took when visiting on the Mini Donut Drive Thru in June).

Agrifair Dates & Location

In 2020 the Abbotsford Agrifair was scheduled to take place in Abbotsford on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of July 31 to August 2 which was also the BC Day Long Weekend.

Drive Thru Safari tours at the Agrifair in 2020 ran from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm each day. Tickets were sold in one-hour time slots. You could arrive up to 15 minutes before your designated hour, or up to 30 minutes after. In other words, you had up to a 105-minute time frame, so if you booked for the 10:00 to 11:00 am period, you had to arrive no earlier than 9:45 and no later than 11:30.

From start to finish, each tour took about 20 minutes to complete, plus extra time if you wanted to buy food.

The Abbotsford Agrifair happens at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park at 32470 Haida Drive.

For tickets and more information see the Abbotsford Agrifair website.

Agrifair Admission Rates

In 2020 admission was $15 per carload for the Drive Thru Safari.

In years when there isn’t a pandemic and the fair operates as it usually does, general admission to the fair is about $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and free for children ages 10 and under. These prices are a fabulous deal as they include admission to most venues, including the lumberjack shows, demolition derby and other performances.

Also in a typical year, 3-day weekend passes are also available at around $18 per person and they provide in-and-out privileges. Rides are extra and parking costs around $5 or so per vehicle (with no in-and-out privileges unless you pay extra for the full weekend).

Amusement Ride Rates

In 2020 there were no amusement rides. There is usually a midway with carnival-style rides, but not this past year due to COVID-19.

In a typical year individual tickets for the rides at the Abbotsford Agrifair cost about $1.25 each or $25 for a book of 20. Little kid-type rides typically take between 3 and 4 tickets and more serious rides require between 4 and 5. The most expensive ride is the Zipper which costs 6 tickets per trip.

The last year when there were rides, all-day wristbands were available for about $38 on the Friday and Sunday, and $40 on the Saturday. This was a comparatively good deal (especially if you wanted to hang out on the Zipper).

Another way to save some years is to go on the Friday between noon and 3:00 pm when all rides cost just $2 or so each.

Again, there were no rides at the Agrifair in 2020. 2021 details, however, will likely be similar to what they have been in the past (and least that is the hope).

Note: Shooting Star Amusements’ ride tickets are non-refundable, so don’t buy more than you need. The tickets never expire, however, so if you don’t use them all up this year you can use them at the Abbotsford Agrifair another day, another year or even at another event in the future.

Agrifair Events & Activities

There is so much to see and do at the Abbotsford Agrifair. There is something for everyone in fact, which makes it a fabulous multi-generational event.

Favourite Agrifair activities most years (but not in 2020) include the following:

  • Midway Amusement Rides – there is a good selection of rides at the Abbotsford Agrifair including a Ferris Wheel and other traditional carnival attractions.
  • Demolition Derby – a series of entertaining events featuring cars racing around a track and crashing into one another.
  • Global FMX Bike Show – motocross jumping and other stunts (although not in 2019).
  • Canadian Wrestling
  • The Laughing Loggers – a logger show that features daily performances.
  • 4-H Club Exhibits – an on-site agri-tour featuring various 4-H Clubs and explanations about the importance of livestock and the agricultural industry.
  • Richards Racers Pigs & Ducks – pig and duck races with Buffalo Bill Beaulieu.

In 2020 the Agrifair operated with a “Drive Thru Safari” theme where people stayed in their vehicles and drive around the fair. The tour took about 20 minutes or so. Along the way guests saw fair animals, model dinosaurs, farm equipment, military vehicles and other fun things. Visitors could also purchase festival food from their cars.

BC Day Long Weekend

Concert Stage Entertainment

In years when there isn’t a pandemic there is Main Stage concert entertainment for everyone.  It comes free with your admission, so bring your own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the shows.  The 2021 lineup has not been released but should be comparable to the last year that the live event took place. The 2019 line-up included the following:

For tickets and more information see the Abbotsford Agrifair website.

Agrifair Video

Below is a video showcasing some of the events and activities at the Abbotsford Agrifair most years.

Included in the video are views from the Ferris wheel, Richard’s Racers pig races, the demolition derby and motocross jumping stunts. Also featured in the video is the RCMP Musical Ride which visited the Agrifair in 2018.

Things not included in the video are the lumberjack shows, evening concerts, animal displays and lots of other fun stuff.

There are so many amazing things to see and do at the Agrifair.

Tips and Advice

Below are some tips and suggestions to help you make the most out of your visit to the Abbotsford Agrifair the next time you can go without having to stay in your car.

TIP #1: Don’t forget that Midway rides cost usually just $2 on the Friday between 12:00 and 3:00 pm. At all other times regular ride attraction rates apply. 2021 details though are to be confirmed.

TIP #2: We highly recommend the Global FMX Motocross events (in years when they take place). The motorcycle jumps and stunts are amazing! The Demolition Derby can be pretty fun to watch too.

TIP #3: If you want a seat in the bleachers for the Global FMX Motocross or Demolition Derby events, get to the respective venues early, and well before show time. On busy days and at popular times, the seats fill up quickly.

TIP #4: If you have young children with sensitive ears, consider letting them use ear plugs or ear protectors of some kind. Most children will love the show, but it can get pretty loud and folk with extra-sensitive hearing may want to cover their ears.

TIP #5: Take a hat and sunscreen and be sure to keep hydrated if it’s a sunny day. It can get hot out in Abbotsford!
