Pride Night Event at Britannia Mine Museum

The Britannia Mine Museum hosts several events throughout the year. In celebration of Pride Month in June, the popular attraction presents Old Town, New Queens. The special pride-themed event celebrates its third year in 2024.

This year’s Old Town, New Queens is on Saturday, June 22nd. The 2SLGBTQ+ celebration runs from 6:00 pm until 9:30 pm. There are two drag performances starting at 7:15 pm and 8:15 pm. The shows are held in Mill No. 3 which is a massive copper concentrator that’s been around for 100 years.

Both before and after the drag shows, folks in attendance are welcome to explore lower site exhibits and do gold panning.

(Note: Activities like the underground tours of the mine aren’t available during the event, but can be done earlier in the day. Also, this is a “dry” event. Non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. Food trucks are also on-site.)

Admission to the 2SLGBTQ+ Pride Night Event

Tickets for Old Town, New Queens are available online. They cost about $45 per person. Early bird tickets are also available until May 11th for about $40 each.

Tickets for the event in 2024 include the two drag performances and after-hours access to the other displays and activities on-site. Folks can check out the summer exhibit, as well as the gold panning station and other permanent exhibits.

About the Britannia Mine Museum

The Britannia Mine Museum is a National Historic Site just south of Squamish. It’s located at 150 Copper Drive along the Sea to Sky Highway at Britannia Beach. The attraction is about 45 minutes north of Vancouver by car.

The site was the largest copper mine in the British Empire at one point. Over the years it was home to 60,000 workers and their families. During its peak of operations, the mine produced up to 7,000 tons of ore on a daily basis! The mine facility has been preserved and is now a popular place to explore. Some of its original buildings are still up and full of all sorts of displays and exhibits.

The museum makes for an interesting and educational visit any time of the year. It’s especially interesting, however, where there are events (like Pride Night). There are other special events on select days in various other seasons, including for Halloween in October and Christmas in December.

Tips & Advice

The tips and suggestions below are good to know before attending Old Town, New Queens.

TIP #1: Similar to many drag shows catering to adults and mature audiences, the performances include strong language and “edgy” subject matter. However, all ages are still welcome to attend. This is an inclusive event (although parental discretion is advised).

TIP #2: Drag performers accept tips, so bring cash with you if you’re feeling generous. There aren’t any ATM machines at the museum.

TIP #3: The Britannia Mine Museum can get chilly depending on the weather. Organizers recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater just in case the buildings get cold.
