Horse Racing at Hastings Raceway

A fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House, Horsepower 4 Horsepower used to feature up to 100 luxury cars on display at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.

NOTE: Hastings Racecourse no longer exists. Consequently, Horsepower 4 Horsepower no longer happens at the venue either. For information about car shows that do still happen in the Lower Mainland, see our article about Vancouver Car Shows or visit the website VancouverCarShows.ca.

Vancouver’s Horsepower 4 Horsepower Event

The Horsepower 4 Horsepower event was one of several great Car Shows in the Lower Mainland. It was a fundraiser featuring a high number of super cars for the public to check out, as well as horse racing.

Horsepower 4 Horsepower took place at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. The venue was located at 188 Renfrew Street in Hastings Park which is right next to the PNE and Pacific Coliseum.

Horse racing used to take place at Hastings Raceway during the warmest six months of the year, and on certain dates they have special events. The Cup, for example, was an event with live music, horse races and where people dress up fancy in July. At that event there were also a few exotic cars on display, although nowhere near as many as at the Horsepower 4 Horsepower event in September. Admission to The Cup was also quite expensive, whereas with Horsepower 4 Horsepower it was free for the general public.

Hastings Racecourse

Hastings Racecourse was one of the more unique sporting venues in Vancouver. Not only were parking and admission free, which is rare, but the racecourse first opened in 1889. That means it was the oldest still-active sports facility in the city!

The horse races took place from April through the end of September most years. There was also a casino at the venue which was open year-round.

There were races on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the spring and summer, and sometimes on Sundays and Mondays as well. The races typically started at 7:30 pm on Fridays, and around 2:00 pm or 2:30 pm on the other days.
