Jagerhof Restaurant

The Deutsches Haus at the Vancouver Alpen Club, Jägerhof in North Vancouver and Old Bavaria Haus in New West are exceptional Lower Mainland German restaurants.

(Note: As of July 2022 the Deutsches Haus at the Vancouver Alpen Club has closed due to planned redevelopment. It hopes to reopen return in a different format in the future, maybe in 2025 or possibly later. The other two restaurants, however, remain open.)

German Restaurants in Vancouver

German dishes such as schnitzel and bratwurst are classic comfort foods. There are just a few really good restaurants within the Lower Mainland that specialize in authentic German cuisine. These include the Old Bavaria Haus, in New Westminster, Deutsche Haus at the Vancouver Alpen Club, and Jägerhof in North Vancouver. We’ve eaten at all three and been impressed.

There are other German restaurants in the region, but these are the best.

Old Bavaria Haus in New Westminster

One of Metro Vancouver’s original German restaurants, the Old Bavaria Haus has been serving customers for over 50 years. Located in a building that’s over 100 years old, and which used to be a private home, the place is tastefully decorated with German pictures and other decor. The food is also really good!

The Old Bavaria Haus has a couple of dining areas on the main floor as well as a covered outdoor patio. Upstairs is another large room that can be rented out for private events, or used when the restaurant gets especially busy. In addition to German decor, the upstairs area has a bar and large TV screens which make it a good place to watch sporting events. There is also another outdoor patio upstairs.

The food at the Bavaria Haus is very good, and the menu is quite extensive. The restaurant’s address is 233 6th Street in New Westminster.

When we went we had the combination dinner which came with schnitzel, bratwurst, spätzle and beef rouladen. We also had the Schnitzel Charlotte which was topped with shrimp, crab and scallops. As an appetizer we had the Prawns Provençale, and for dessert a chocolate mousse. It was all delicious! The service was excellent and the ambience was delightful. It’s a cute place!

Old Bavaria Haus Tips

There is pay on-street parking right outside the restaurant. There is also free parking on side streets just a block or two away. Wednesdays are the busiest nights. That’s because the schnitzel entrees are 20% off those evenings (or at least they were the last time we checked). And finally, the most popular item on the menu is probably the schnitzel with mushroom sauce. The next time we go we’ll probably try that!

North Vancouver’s Jägerhof Restaurant

Jägerhof is a smaller German restaurant found in North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale District. Located at 71 Lonsdale Avenue, it’s about a 5-minute walk from Lonsdale Quay, so highly accessible by transit including the SeaBus.

Similar to the Deutsche Haus, Jägerhof serves guests from Tuesdays to Sundays, but not on Mondays. Hours of operation are usually from 5:00 pm until late. The restaurant also serves brunch on Sundays from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm.

Jägerhof restaurant hosts live music on weekends. Most entertainers are local talent and really good. Reviewers say the live music adds to the ambiance.

The cuisine at Jägerhof is from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The traditional dishes include schnitzel, spaetzle, bratwurst and red cabbage. The place also serves a large selection of imported beer and other spirits from Germany, Bavaria, Austria and other Eastern European spots.

Visit the Jägerhof Restaurant website for further information.

The Deutsches Haus at the Vancouver Alpen Club

(Note: This restaurant has closed, as of the summer of 2022. It will hopefully reopen again in 2025, although exact details are to be confirmed.)

Located at 4875 Victoria Drive in downtown Vancouver, the Deutsches Haus was a German restaurant found within the lower level of the Vancouver Alpen Club. The dining establishment was usually open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 am until 9:00 pm.

When it was open the Deutsches Haus served traditional German food such as schnitzel, German sausage, pork hock and sauerkraut. There was also German beer on tap. In addition to being a popular German restaurant, the Deutsches Haus could be rented for private events.

Decorations at the Deutsches Haus were reminiscent of a real German restaurant, with old-school wood accents and wall hangings. The restaurant was also accessible with two parking lots on-site. Reviewers on TripAdvisor recommended the shared plates such as the Feast for Four, saying that the portion sizes were ample and contained all the German staples.

Good to know, the Alpen Club used to host a fabulous Oktoberfest event in the fall. It was one of the best in the Lower Mainland. Check out Vancouver Oktoberfest for details. We went a couple of times and it was a great event!
