The Listel Hotel in Vancouver

Vancouver's Listel Hotel on Robson Street

Located on Robson Street in Vancouver’s West End, the Listel Hotel was a unique, art-filled place to stay. It was a nice hotel with an art museum theme.

Vancouver’s Listel Hotel on Robson Street

The West End’s Listel Hotel was a conveniently-located 3.5-star hotel. The place was known for its emphasis on both the arts and the environment.

The Vancouver hotel was founded in 1992. It was full of a variety of art that was always on display throughout the building. Every room had original artwork to admire, and each floor had its own artistic theme that showcased local, international and/or First Nations pieces. The average room wasn’t “full” of art, but they all had at least one or two pieces.

The Listel was a proud smoke-free and zero-waste hotel. It provided guests with complimentary filtered water along with access to the Internet and a small fitness centre. The hotel was home to the Forage restaurant which also closed in the late stages of 2024.

The hotel used to allow up to two pets per room with an extra charge (of around $25 per night the last time we checked), and all furry friends had to be leashed in the hotel’s common areas. Underground parking at the hotel was about the same.

Where is the Listel Hotel?

The Listel Hotel was located at 1300 Robson Street in Vancouver’s West End.

Robson Street is a popular, trendy street featuring high-end shops and numerous restaurants that are popular among tourists. Major attractions a short drive away from the hotel included Stanley Park, Canada Place, the Vancouver Art Gallery and English Bay. Granville Island with its shops and theatres was about 15 minutes from the hotel.

Listel Hotel’s Robson Street location was very convenient, especially for people who enjoyed shopping and eating out. The hotel was at the edge of the street’s busiest and most interesting area. There were lots of fashionable name-brand shops and boutiques close by.

If you like Japanese things, an interesting place to check out is the Konbiniya Japanese Centre. The shop is like a little corner store you might find in Japan. For anyone who’s lived in that country before, what you’ll see inside might make you homesick.

If you like heritage buildings and Canadian history, another place we recommend visiting is the Roedde House Museum. It’s located at 1415 Barclay Street, so just three or four blocks away from where the hotel used to be. It’s a house that was built by Sir Francis Rattenbury who was the architect who designed a number of famous buildings in BC including the Empress Hotel and Parliament Buildings in Victoria and the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver.

Hotel Rooms at the Listel

At the hotel there was a Modern Art Floor, a Museum Floor and a Gallery Floor. There were also Artist Series Suites and a BC Suite.

Rooms and the hallway on the first of the above-mentioned floors had modern art on display. Rooms on the Museum Floor had pieces that were loaned from Vancouver’s Museum of Anthropology which is located at the University of British Columbia (or UBC). Rooms on the Gallery Floor had original art by both international and Canadian artists.

Compared to the other floors, the Gallery rooms were usually a bit more expensive. They were also on a slightly higher floor.

The Artist Series Suites offered fancier accommodations and included a living room. The BC Suite, meanwhile, was extra wholesome and came with its own large outdoor patio. It was also considerably more expensive.

Rooms on the Modern Art, Museum and Gallery floors were all very nice. They were likely what gave the place its 3.5-star rating. The suites though were closer to what you might find in a suite at a 4-star hotel, and the BC Suite probably ranked even higher.

Hotel Restaurants

Ocean Wise Seafood ProgramBefore it closed down, the restaurant at the Listel Hotel was Forage. Similar to the hotel, the restaurant tried to limit its waste and conserve energy. It used fresh local produce as much as possible, and it served fish from the Ocean Wise program. The focus of the place was on local produce, meats and seafood.

There are lots of other great restaurants in the area too. A popular Japanese one is Ramen Danbo which is right across the street from where the Listel Hotel used to be. It specializes in Fukuoka-style Japanese noodle soups (which are delicious)! The restaurant is reasonably-priced and there is often a lineup to get in.
