COVID-19 IMPACT ON DOWNTOWN HOTELS
The outbreak of the novel coronavirus is having a terrible impact on the local tourism, hospitality and hotel industries. With foreign travel banned, people encouraged to stay at home and restaurants no longer able to offer table service, hotels are suffering the effects.
Some downtown Vancouver hotels have closed completely for the immediate future. Those that are staying open are taking all kinds of extra precautionary measures. Rooms are being sanitized like never before and guests showing signs of symptoms are being told to stay away. Cancellation policies at many places are also being updated to allow guests to more easily cancel without penalty (and in most cases up to within 24 hours).
As of March 26th, 2020, it appears that the following hotels have closed their doors completely until further notice:
- Fairmont Waterfront – at 900 Canada Place. (Effective March 24th.)
- Fairmont Hotel Vancouver – at 900 West Georgia Street. (Effective March 21st.)
- Hotel Rosewood Georgia – at 801 West Georgia Street. (Effective March 22nd.)
- Hyatt Regency Vancouver – at 655 Burrard Street. (Not taking reservations until at least May 11th, 2020.)
- Listel Hotel – at 1300 Robson Street. (As per their March 22nd post on Facebook.)
- OPUS Hotel – at 322 Davie Street.
- St. Regis Hotel – at 602 Dunsmuir Street. (Effective March 27th, 2020.)
- Trump Hotel – at 1161 West Georgia Street.
- Wedgewood Hotel – at 845 Hornby Street. (As per their March 24th post on Facebook.)
- YWCA Hotel – a budget hotel at 733 Beatty Street. (They have temporarily “suspended new bookings” as of March 23rd, 2020.)

Vancouver’s Best Downtown Hotels
Vancouver has hundreds of hotels to choose from. Below we list some of the best hotels in downtown Vancouver organized by location. (By “best” we mean “best in class” and with good ratings, and places we include range from 2.5-star to 5-star.)
We’ve divided the downtown core into five main districts – near (1) Waterfront Station, Canada Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre, (2) on or near Georgia Street, (3) in central downtown Vancouver towards False Creek, (4) near Yaletown and BC Place Stadium and (5) in Vancouver’s West End.
In downtown Vancouver there are major hotel chains like the Coast, Delta, Fairmont, Hyatt, Marriott and Westin. There are also locally-based chains like the Pinnacle and Executive Hotels & Resorts, as well as smaller independent places and one-of-a-kind boutique hotels.
Whether you want to be near the water, in the heart of the city, somewhere ultra-modern, in something with history, a place that’s affordable, or in a suite that’s ultra-fancy, there’s something for everyone.
