Copper and Fire is an art event at the Britannia Mine Museum in September where local artists showcase art made from copper, fire and materials “of the earth.”

Copper and Fire Event at Britannia Mine Museum

Britannia Mine used to be the biggest copper mine in the British Empire when it was active. The mine hasn’t been worked for decades. The site is now a museum and national historic site that celebrates copper and the history of mining in the area.

Copper and Fire is a unique art exhibition where around six or so local artists display various pieces of art made with a copper and fire theme. In 2023 the event celebrated its 19th year.

Location and Admission

The Britannia Mine Museum is located in Britannia Beach on 150 Copper Drive along the Sea to Sky Highway between Vancouver and Squamish. It’s about a 10- to 15-minute drive south of Squamish.

Access to the Copper and Fire event is free with general admission to the museum. As of December, 2023, admission to the museum costs around $40 for adults and $36 for seniors. Teenagers cost around $30 and children ages 5 to 12 are $22. Little ones ages 4 and under have free admission.

The museum operates from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, but the Copper and Fire event only ran from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 16th, in 2023. When you bought your regular admission ticket to the museum that day you got to enjoy the Copper and Fire Celebration activities for free!

What to Expect

Copper and Fire is a small but very interesting art exhibition. And it’s at one of Canada’s most interesting museums! The art-themed event features artists who work in different styles. The artists display and sell their art, but also demonstrate and talk about how it is made.

Since admission to Copper and Fire was included with your ticket to the Britannia Mine Museum, it made September 16th an extra good day to head up the Sea to Sky Highway to visit the area. The museum is already an exceptional place to visit on its own, and having beautiful pieces of art to look at on top of the regular exhibits only enhances the experience.
