The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, in the heart of Richmond’s Steveston Village, has special Halloween-themed displays and activities in October.
The Haunted Sea at the Cannery is a good, family-friendly attraction. It’s a bit more low key than other Halloween events in the Lower Mainland, but it’s both interesting and educational.
Canyon Frights in North Vancouver, Harvest Days at VanDusen Gardens and the Howl Over Canada film in Vancouver are terrific Halloween attractions in the Lower Mainland that are also suitable for younger children. You can also visit various Pumpkin Patch farm venues in the Fraser Valley and drop by lots of other fun places. This year, from October 9th to 13th, the Circus Circo Osorio is also in Richmond (which will make Lansdowne Mall a best place to be that week).

The Haunted Sea at the Cannery in 2025
The Haunted Sea attraction features colourful undersea creatures and displays made from upcycled materials, along with educational content about ocean health and plastic waste.
In 2025, the event runs from September 27th to November 2nd, daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. New this year are two additions: an opening-day ghost jellyfish craft workshop and Saturday film screenings as part of the One Ocean Film Tour.
Admission and Location
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is at 12138 Fourth Avenue in Steveston Village in Richmond. The Cannery is near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Moncton Street. It is about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the Britannia Shipyards.
Below are the admission prices to the Cannery for 2025.
- Adults (ages 18 or older): $13.25
- Seniors (ages 65 or older): $11.25
- Youth (ages 17 and younger): Free
Members of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society also get in for free. Admission to the Haunted Sea is included with regular museum entry. The new One Ocean film screenings are by donation (suggested $10 for adults, $5 for youth), with booking required through Eventbrite from the Cannery’s website. The jellyfish workshop is free, but advance registration is required online.
About the Event
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site. It’s a museum where guests can learn about the history of local salmon canning. There are educational displays highlighting the economic importance, manufacturing processes and other details about the Cannery from past years.
For Halloween, the Cannery decorates with recyclable and upcycled materials under “The Haunted Sea” theme. Spaces are dim with black lights and a light fog effect. There are no strobe or flashing lights and no jump scares, so the experience is suitable for families with young children.
Added Attractions in 2025
New for 2025, the Cannery offers an opening-day ghost jellyfish craft workshop on Saturday, September 27th. Families help to build a giant ghost jellyfish that becomes part of the Haunted Sea installation. Sessions take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The workshop is free but advance registration is required on the Cannery’s website.
Also new are One Ocean Film Tour screenings on October 11th, 18th, and 25th, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Entry is by donation (suggested $10 adults, $5 youth) and booking is via Eventbrite from a link on the Cannery’s website. These screenings do not include general admission.
Tips & Advice
Below are some tips to help you make the most of your visit to the Cannery for the Halloween attractions.
TIP #1: If you go to Steveston Village, be sure to drop by the Cannery while you’re there. Steveston Village is a lovely place to visit, and the Cannery is one of its highlights.
TIP #2: Register early for the free ghost jellyfish workshop on September 27th through the Cannery website. It is a new addition for 2025 and will likely be popular.
TIP #3: Book the One Ocean Film Tour screenings through Eventbrite in advance via the link on the Cannery website. Donations are processed at the time of booking.
TIP #4: The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Sites, just like Fort Langley and Britannia Mine are elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. Both of these other places also offer special activities during the fall and Halloween seasons. On the Thanksgiving Long Weekend the fort hosts the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival, which is a great event. The fort is also decorated with scarecrows for much of the season. It also hosts the Grave Tales Walking Tours which are exceptional. The Britannia Mine Museum, meanwhile, hosts the Dia de los Muertos on weekends just before and around Halloween.
