Mahony’s Tavern Pub-Style Restaurants in Vancouver

Mahoney & Sons Pub

Mahony’s Tavern is a locally-owned Vancouver restaurant and pub with one location in False Creek and another at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

It used to be called Mahony & Sons, but now it’s called Mahony’s Tavern. It also used to have a distinct Irish theme, but not so much anymore.

Vancouver’s Mahony & Sons Irish Pubs

The original Mahony & Sons opened on the UBC campus in 2006. While quite popular, the location closed its doors in the summer of 2019.

Over the past few years Mahony & Sons has rebranded their restaurants and the menu. The restaurants used to focus on Irish-style food and decor as well as seafood. Now, they focus more on premium-casual dining and classic pub-style dishes.

In years without global pandemics, the restaurants occasionally host live bands on weekends. They also do this around St. Patrick’s Day.

Locations and Hours

Mahony’s operates two restaurant locations in the City of Vancouver. One can be found at the northeast corner of the Vancouver Convention Centre at #36 1055 Canada Place. It overlooks the waters of Burrard Inlet and is on the other side of the Convention Centre from the Tap & Barrel in Jack Poole Plaza.

The second restaurant is in False Creek at 601 Stamps Landing which is about halfway between Olympic Village and Granville Island. This second location has stunning views of the False Creek waterfront and downtown Vancouver.

Hours of operation differ between the two locations. The last time we checked the Vancouver Convention Centre restaurant was open daily from 11:30 am Monday to Saturday and on Sundays from 11:00 am. Meanwhile, the Mahony & Sons False Creek location was open from 12:00 pm Monday to Friday, from 11:30 am on Saturdays and from 10:00 am on Sundays.

About the Venues

Both Mahony locations are waterfront with covered and heated outdoor patios that are open year-round. The views from both are pretty spectacular.

Mahony’s at Stamps Landing (in False Creek)

The restaurant at Stamps Landing is larger and arguably more impressive than the one at the Convention Centre (although both are really nice). This location has a couple of floors and a capacity of well over 400 people. There are patios on both floors with views of the water looking west, north and east.

There isn’t a lot of parking in the area. The pub is conveniently located though on the False Creek Seawall. On foot or bicycle, it’s just over a kilometre from Olympic Village (and places like the Tap & Barrel and Craft Beer Market). In the other direction, the restaurant is just under 2 kilometres from Granville Island (which also has lots of pubs and restaurants as well as a number of theatres).

TIP: False Creek Ferries and the Aquabus run up and down False Creek during the day until early evening. They both have stops at Granville Island, Stamps Landing and Olympic Village, as well as other places in the area.

Mahony’s in Coal Harbour

The other Mahony location is the one in Coal Harbour in the northeast corner of the Vancouver Convention Centre. It’s the pub by the giant blue rain drop sculpture. From its patio you can see Canada Place in one direction and the North Shore Mountains on the other side of Burrard Inlet in another.

This location is in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Just a few blocks away are Waterfront Station, Gastown and the beginning of Granville Street. Tourist attractions in the area include FlyOver Canada at Canada Place and the Vancouver Lookout in the Harbour Centre Building. The Harbour Air Seaplane terminal is also just steps away.

Parking in the area is expensive. Public transit, however, is very convenient.

FlyOver Canada is a multi-dimensional theatre at Canada Place (so less than a 5-minute walk from the restaurant in Coal Harbour). If you want to experience Canada from the air, it’s an attraction well worth checking out!

Mahony’s Menu

In previous years, Mahony’s menus used to be more Irish-inspired. The restaurant has rebranded since then though to include more dishes from elsewhere in the world (including a few Asian rice bowl and Thai curry options). The place is still very much a pub-style restaurant though. Shareable appetizers and burgers fill up a good portion of their menus.

The menus at Mahony’s vary slightly between the two locations. However, common staples that appear at both restaurants include traditional pub food like chicken wings, fish & chips, nachos, chicken tenders, beef dip, seafood chowder and quesadillas.

The False Creek location of Mahony has a slightly larger menu. In addition to the regular pub-style dishes, the False Creek restaurant also offers a selection of both vegetarian and meat pizzas (which the Coal Harbour venue didn’t have when we checked).

On our last visit we had the Szechuan chicken appetizer. It included chunks of deep-fried chicken with a sweet chili sauce, wonton chips and diced cucumber. It was delicious! Something we’ll definitely have again!

Happy Hour at Mahoney’s

Both of the Mahony locations offer a discounted Happy Hour menu. Deals include around 20% off most food items on the regular menu and discounts on select alcoholic beverages. The Happy Hour menu options are fairly consistent between the two locations.
