Aldor Acres Farm at Christmas
Open as long as supplies last, Aldor Acres Christmas Tree Farm has its own collection of Christmas trees ready to be sold. Last year, Christmas season on the farm began on November 25th and ended on December 17th. 2024 dates are to be confirmed.
Even when the trees sell out early, there’s still reason to visit the farm. Aldor Acres has a gift shop where you can buy food, soaps and Christmas decorations. There are also farm animals to admire.
Location and Admission
Aldor Acres is located at 8301-252nd Street in Langley. It’s a family-run farm that began hosting public events with a pumpkin patch in the 1980s. Now, Aldor Acres is a year-round attraction.
The Christmas Tree Farm is usually open seven days a week from late November until around the third weekend in December. On weekdays the hours of operation are typically from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. On weekends the farm is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.
There is an admission fee of $5 per person to enter the farm during the Christmas season. Parking is normally free. Trees vary in price depending on their type and height. They are usually about $15 or $16 per foot.
The farm is open rain or shine (or snow!), so don’t worry about it closing due to the weather unless conditions are actually dangerous.
2024 dates and prices are to be confirmed.
What to Expect
The main focus of the Christmas season at Aldor Acres is the trees. There are about six different varieties for sale. In 2021 available trees included Douglas Firs, Frasers, Grand Firs, Nobles, Nordmanns and Live Spruce. The selection in 2024 will likely be similar.
Based on previous years, you can expect to see Christmas lights and other decorations near the entrance. Closer to Christmas Day, Santa sometimes pops by for a visit! You can usually warm yourself up with some hot chocolate as well as cookies, hot dogs and other snacks which are available for sale.
Along with the trees there is the seasonal market which you can place orders for online. You can buy beef, pork, eggs, preserves and other food as well as artisan soaps. In addition, there are Christmas decorations available for purchase.
One of the combo deals on offer a few years ago was the Christmas Porch Package. This cost $60 and included a wreath, a garland and a miniature Christmas tree. 2024 details are to be confirmed.
One of the things Aldor Acres is known for is its farm animal displays, and those are still open at Christmas time. You can explore some of the barns and see all the numerous animals including goats, pigs, a horse, a cow, a donkey and more.
Tips & Advice
Below are some suggestions and additional information to help you make the most of your tree picking adventure.
General Info and Suggestions
TIP #1: Buy your tree from a local farm or charity Christmas tree fundraising event if you can. It might be a bit more expensive than from a big box store, but your purchase will help support local businesses and organizations. It’s also fun selecting and cutting down your tree at a farm. Click Christmas Tree Locations for a list of charities selling trees.
TIP #2: There is more at Aldor Acres than just trees. The farm has a gift shop area, and farm animals to look at. There is usually a campfire to enjoy, and tables to sit at. It’s a nice rustic place to take young children to. They’ll enjoy the entire experience.
TIP #3: Aldor Acres isn’t far from Fort Langley. While in the area, consider going to the National Historic Site and wandering around the town.
TIP #4: You don’t have to take any special equipment to get your tree at Aldor Acres. Saws are provided. You will need a roof rack and something to tie your tree down with, however, unless you have room to put it inside your vehicle. A tarp can also come in handy.
Things to Consider When Choosing Your Tree
TIP #1: The largest and nicest trees at Aldor Acres are usually at the far end of the field.
TIP #2: The disadvantage of getting your tree from the far end of the field is that you then have a long ways to haul it back to pay for it. And the trees can be heavy (especially after carrying it for a few minutes)!
TIP #3: Unless you re-use an artificial tree for many years (like for over a dozen), using a real tree each year is actually better for the environment (especially if you get it Chipped and Turned into Mulch in the New Year). It’s also best for the environment if you can buy one that’s locally-grown.
TIP #4: Nordmanns, Frasers and Nobles are trees that keep their needles the best. They’ll likely be a bit more expensive, but they make less of a mess and look nice the longest. Douglas Firs, meanwhile, have some of the strongest scents (which can be both good or bad depending on who you are).
TIP #5: At Aldor Acres you can cut down your own tree or buy one that’s already cut. The former will be fresher and, obviously, grown on site. It’ll also involve more work. The latter will be simpler to get, but without the full “experience.” The pre-cut tree will also likely be from some other location, possibly from BC or elsewhere in North America.
TIP #6: Go early in the season to get the best selection. The nicest trees go fast, and some farms actually sell out.
TIP #7: Before finalizing your choice of a tree, give a branch a tug and see if the needles fall off. If the tree is fresh and healthy, the needles won’t come off so easily.
Things to Consider After You Have Your Tree
TIP #1: You can usually get your tree wrapped for about $7 at Aldor Acres. Wrapping your tree makes it easier to transport home, either inside your vehicle or on its roof racks.
TIP #2: Don’t forget you’ll need a tree stand. If you don’t already have one, you can buy one at the farm for between about $35 and $60 most years.
TIP #3: Before taking your tree inside your house, and before getting it wrapped even, give it a good shake (just in case it’s home to a few sleeping bugs).
