The White Rock Moon Festival is a free event that involves live music, fireworks and hundreds of lanterns on the pier in the seaside town of White Rock.
With a theme of “Unity, World Peace and Love,” the 2-day event has taken place in either the month of August or September in recent years. Because of COVID-19, however, it wasn’t able to happen in 2020 and it likely didn’t happen in 2021 either.
Moon Festival
In 2019 the White Rock Moon Festival took place on the weekend of September 13th and 14th. 2022 details are to be confirmed.
The event has a multicultural theme, usually features a number of bands and is family-friendly.
When is the Moon Festival?
In 2019 the White Rock Moon Festival ran from 5 to 9 pm on Saturday September 13th, and from 10 am until 9 pm on Sunday September 14th.
2022 dates and details are to be confirmed, although it will likely be comparable to 2019.
Where is the Moon Festival?
In years when it does happen, the festival takes place at the White Rock Pier which is located at 15322 White Rock Promenade. Some activities take place on the pier and others nearby in the park.
The resort town of White Rock itself is located less than an hour southeast of Vancouver (in good traffic) between Surrey and the US border.
About the Moon Festival
The White Rock Moon Festival is hosted by the City of White Rock and the White Rock Chinese Association.
2019 Festival Activities
Activities at the event in 2019 included Chinese dancing on the pier, classical music, live Rock music and miscellaneous children’s activities. There was also a small fireworks display on the Saturday evening as well as hundreds of decorative Chinese lanterns to walk under and admire along the pier on both days. Samples of moon cakes and other delicious foods were also available from the vendors throughout the park.
The 2019 event featured live performances from local bands, artists, dancers and other local community groups. September 13th featured performances by young Jazz musicians followed by a performance from a live orchestra at the Opening Ceremony. Warrior Monks martial art performers from China’s Shaolin Temple presented on September 14th along with a multitude of other talented dance and musical performances.
2022 details will likely be comparable, assuming the festival is able to take place again.
Other Information
The Moon Festival isn’t as large as some of White Rock’s other annual festivals, but it’s still a good one. Parking can still be a challenge, but not as much as at other times.
