Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Hometown Run in September

Port Coquitlam Terry Fox Run

The Terry Fox Hometown Run is an event that raises money for cancer research. It takes place in Port Coquitlam which is where Terry Fox attended school.

There are many Terry Fox Runs in the Lower Mainland, and all over Canada, but only one that happens in the community where Terry Fox went to high school as a teenager.

Terry Fox Runs happen in Canada on the second Sunday after Labour Day. Consequently, in 2025, they take place on Sunday, September 14th. The Terry Fox Hometown Run is on that day too, with registration starting at 8:00 am and the actual running starting at 10:00 am.

See the City of Port Coquitlam‘s website for full details about the Terry Fox Hometown Run.

Terry Fox Hometown Run in Port Coquitlam

The Terry Fox Hometown Run is an inspiring annual event that celebrates a Canadian hero’s vision of hope and determination. There are lots of Terry Fox Runs that happen in the Metro Vancouver region, but only one Terry Fox Hometown Run.

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg in 1958, but moved to Surrey, BC, when he was in elementary school. A couple of years later his family moved to Port Coquitlam where the young athlete attended Port Coquitlam Senior Secondary School, which is now called Terry Fox Secondary School in his honour. Tragically, in 1977, the young man’s right leg had to be amputated due to cancer.

Terry Fox is famous for running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He did that in 1980, or almost, as he didn’t make it to the end before his cancer returned. The first annual Terry Fox Run took place the following year, after Terry Fox’s death from the disease, and the fundraising run has been happening annually ever since (except for a year or two during the era of COVID).

Today, people of all ages and abilities can join the Terry Fox Hometown Run (and other Terry Fox Runs) by running, walking, cycling or wheeling, all in support of cancer research efforts. More than just a run, the event is a chance for the community to unite, share Terry’s legacy and support a cause that continues to impact lives across the country.

Where and When

In 2025 the Terry Fox Hometown Run takes place on September 14th in Terry’s hometown of Port Coquitlam. What to Expect

The day begins with participants gathering to register, connect and join in a spirit of community. This year’s theme, “Finish It,” honours Terry’s commitment to the Marathon of Hope (which was the name of his fundraising run in 1980). The event in Port Coquitlam welcomes everyone, whether you are aiming for a challenging distance or simply enjoying a family-friendly walk. Volunteers and supporters can come to cheer on participants throughout the course and create an uplifting atmosphere.

See the City of Port Coquitlam‘s website for full details about the Terry Fox Hometown Run.

Route Information

Participants can choose from three route options: 2 km, 6 km and 8 km. Each route is fully accessible and open to walkers, runners, cyclists, rollerbladers and those using wheelchairs or strollers. Leashed dogs are welcome too.

This year, participants start at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre and follow a course that passes the new inspirational sculptures at Port Coquitlam Community Centre. Runners and walkers also run through the Marathon of Hope in Terry Fox Hometown Square before looping back to finish at Hyde Creek. Along the way, water stations are provided on the route with signs encouraging participants and celebrating Terry’s spirit.

Registration Information

Registration is open to everyone with no entry fee required. Participants are encouraged to make a donation or collect pledges in support of cancer research. All funds raised go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation which continues the mission Terry Fox began with his Marathon of Hope over forty years ago.

Early registration for the run is recommended, as it allows time for fundraising, participation in community team efforts and enjoying the fun atmosphere.
