Vancouver hosted its first two matches of FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer on June 8, with a Cameroon vs. Ecuador and Japan vs. Switzerland doubleheader.
First FIFA Games in Vancouver
Cameroon clobbered Ecuador 6-0 in an exciting first game, and Japan just squeaked by the Swiss, beating them 1-0.
BC Place Stadium was definitely the best place to be in Vancouver during the games. Despite the stands being only half full, close to 30,000 soccer fans turned out for the games.
Vancouver next hosts the FIFA World Cup on Friday, June 12, when Cameroon takes on last year’s champions, the Japanese, and Ecuador plays the Swiss.
Cameroon vs. Ecuador Match
The Cameroon vs. Ecuador match was an exciting one, despite Cameroon being so dominant. The Cameroonians truly were impressive. It will be an exciting match when they take on the Japanese at BC Place on June 12.
Japan vs. Switzerland Match
The Japanese and Swiss game was especially thrilling, with the game up for grabs most of the match. The Swiss really put on the pressure at the end, not quite tying the score in the last minute of the game with a beautiful shot that only just missed the goal.
Post game, lots of Japanese fans in Vancouver were breathing a sigh of relief and celebrating. Some of the region’s most popular Japanese restaurants were no doubt happy places to be.
