Big 80’s Run at Burnaby’s Central Park

The Big Fun Run Series is a set of family-friendly runs at different locations in Metro Vancouver. Each run has its own theme and multiple distances to choose from. The events are non-competitive and fun for everyone.

In 2024, the series kicks off with a new event. The Big 80’s Run features 1K and 5K runs at Central Park in Burnaby. The venue is a large and beautiful setting for the event. Runners make their way through the forested trails and enjoy time in nature. The trails are flat and suitable for all ages. In fact, parents with strollers and participants with leashed dogs are welcome to participate.

Similar to other events in the series, with the Big 80’s Run there are several prizes to be won. The fastest runners receive vouchers, while the main awards are given to runners with the best costume, best fun name on their bib, and other categories. There are also randomly drawn door prizes.

In 2024, the inaugural Big 80’s Run takes place on Saturday, March 9th. The charitable partner of the run this year is Music Heals which provides access to music therapy for vulnerable people in British Columbia and across Canada.

Schedule and Routes

Participants can check in before their runs starting at noon on the day of the event. The 1K run begins at 1:00 pm and the route closes at 1:40 pm. Then, the 5K run starts at 2:00 pm and finishes at 4:00 pm. Warm-ups for both runs happen 15 minutes prior to their respective starting times.

The 1K route takes place in the northern half of Central Park, between Patterson SkyTrain Station and Swangard Stadium. Participants run in one direction for about 0.5 km, and then back to the starting location to complete the full 1 km.

The 5K route, meanwhile, is more complex. Participants get to see a lot of the park, including both the Upper and Lower Lakes. The route winds through the middle of the park and also along the southern and western perimeter trails.
