Big Superhero Run in Metro Vancouver

The Big Superhero Run is a themed running event that happens in August each year. It’s one of several running events in the Big Fun Run Series which also includes the Big 80’s Run and Big Jungle Run in Burnaby, the Big Pirate Run in Richmond, and the Big Easter Run and Big Elf Run, both in Vancouver. All Big Fun Run Series events emphasize fun over competitive running.

As its name implies, the Big Superhero Run has a superhero theme. Participants dress up in appropriate costumes and wear a hero eye mask which comes with registration. Although costumes aren’t required, it’s a fun addition that makes this series different from events run by other organizations.

At the event, there’s also live entertainment and multiple prizes up for grabs. For example, there are prizes for the best costume, best pet costume and best social media post. Other prizes include free entries to other Big Fun Run Series events, along with gift vouchers and more.

The event’s charity partner is the Richmond Hospital Foundation which works to create a healthier future for everyone in the city. It’s a great cause and donations are encouraged.

The third edition of the Big Superhero Run took place on Wednesday, August 16th in 2023. The run typically starts and finishes outside the Richmond Olympic Oval located at 6111 River Road.

Running Routes

The run in 2023 featured three different routes to choose from. There was a special Kids’ Run that was just 1 km long, which was perfect for little children interested in participating. For older youth and adults, there were 5 km and 10 km routes.

The runs usually begin at the Richmond Olympic Oval and then wind through the Middle Arm Trail which is close to the waterfront and full of great views. The routes only feature mild inclines and so are good for all ages. Some people run with kids in strollers and leashed dogs can also tag along.

Registration Prices

The cost for registration depends on your age, which run you sign up for and how many people you register with. Costs increase as the event gets closer as well.

As of mid-2023, the early bird price to participate in the 1 km Kids’ Run was $19. Youth under the age of 18 could also sign up for the 5 km and 10 km routes for $26. Adult rates, however, were different. Folks ages 18 and over who registered for the 5 km or 10 km run paid an early bird price of $35 each.

Registration last year included a finisher’s medal, a personalized running bib and a hero eye mask. It cost $8 to get your run kit mailed to you but the kit was also available for pick-up one day before the event or one hour before the run.

Registration fees for the run in 2024 are to be confirmed.
