Vancouver’s BCIT EVolution ’22 Electric Vehicle Event

BCIT Evolution Electric Vehicle Festival of Learning

A new Vancouver event held at BCIT, EVolution ’22 is an opportunity to learn about EV transportation, electric vehicles and people in the EV industry.

NOTE: This event has been postponed until 2023.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is a great place to learn about lots of things. In 2022, on Sunday, September 25th, it was going to be an especially amazing place to learn everything there is to know about electric vehicles. That’s because that’s when EVolution ’22 was going to take place, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. It was going to be a free event and expected to attract as many as 15,000 people!

At the end of August, 2022, it was announced that EVolution ’22 would be postponed until 2023. That’s because of ongoing construction projects taking place on the BCIT campus. The construction and renovations were supposed to be finished by September, but for various reasons that won’t now be the case. As a result, the event is NOT Happening in 2022 as originally planned. 2023 dates and other details are to be confirmed.

BCIT’s EVolution ’22 Festival of Learning

EVolution ’22 is a new event coming to the British Columbia Institute of Technology in September. It’s free to attend and is a showcase for all the latest in electric vehicle technology.

The event is meant to be both educational and entertaining with dozens of displays and attractions to explore. You can take a test drive in a new electric vehicle, learn about the history of electric vehicles and meet some of the entrepreneurs who are working in the industry.

This event is similar to Electrafest which was an electric vehicle tradeshow in Vancouver in years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCIT event, however, is much larger and comprehensive. It also offers even more things to see and do.

Where and When

EVolution ’22 was going to take place on Sunday, September 25th, at BCIT’s Burnaby campus at 3700 Willingdon Avenue. The event was going to run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and, as mentioned above, it’s entirely free.

Those who already own electric vehicles can have free priority parking if they register to take part in Flash Forward, which is an attempt by the event organizers to break the world record for the most electric vehicles ever gathered in one place. The current record is 733, set in Quebec in 2021.

(Note: The event is NOT taking place as planned in 2022. It has been postponed until 2023. Exact details about next year’s event are to be confirmed.)

What to Expect at EVolution ’22/’23

When it does take place, there will plenty to see and do at EVolution ’22 (or actually EVolution ’23). This includes the opportunity to take some vehicles for a spin yourself! There is an electric scooter obstacle course to maneuver through as well as an e-bike circuit. There are also various vehicles on hand with professionals there to walk you through their operation.

For the younger folk there is a Kids’ Carnival with a number of hands-on activities. There is an educational show presented by Science World, a mini-race circuit, and demonstrations for things like balloon rockets and elastic-powered cars.

The BCIT Planetarium will be open to take a look at electric energy on a larger scale. If the weather is nice on the day of the event there will be a solar telescope on hand that can be used to look at the sun as it moves across the sky. For those who want to grab a bite to eat there are food trucks to choose from too.

Of course, a big part of this event is learning about the vehicles themselves. There are a variety of electric vehicles on display and information about their history. Over 30 different brands take part in this event, each with its own EV Ambassador to answer any questions about the technology.

Did you know that VancouversBestPlaces.com is an environmentally-responsible website? We use green energy to power our office needs, we use a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to get around town, and we are officially carbon neutral! How many other events, attractions and travel-related media can say all that? More of them should we think!

Main Stage and Forum Schedules

On top of the informational displays and hands-on activities, a big part of EVolution ’22 is the speaker series and other forums. There are three different spots with a scheduled events list, including the Main Stage which has a Talk with the Expert Series. The full guest list was set to be announced in September (until the event for this year got cancelled). Below is a rough outline of what people were going to be able to expect.

  • 11:45 am – Talk with the Expert Series 2

There are also a YouTubers’ Forum and Innovators’ Stage with more presentations. The forum includes a series of EV-focused YouTubers from around the continent talking about where they see the future of EV headed. The Innovators’ Stage has demonstrations of new products and services that are either just arriving on the market or could soon.

The schedules for both the YouTubers’ Forum and the Innovators’ Stage are “to be confirmed” as of early August.
