West Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Cypress at New Year's Eve

Vancouver’s Cypress Ski Hill celebrates New Year’s Eve on December 31 with family-friendly activities and fireworks. It’s not a huge event, but it is free.

The event was going to take place on December 31st in 2019. However, because of heavy rain, the event was cancelled. Due to the pandemic the event was cancelled again in both 2020 and 2021. Fireworks are happening at Cypress, however, on December 31st in 2022 (and also at Grouse Mountain).

New Year’s Eve at Cypress Ski Hill

In typical years, season’s pass members and day ticket holders can usually enjoy marshmallow s’mores, bonfires, and a bit of entertainment on the evening of December 31st at Cypress Mountain’s New Year’s Eve festivities. Compared to parties elsewhere, it’s a pretty small event, but it’s free, fun and finishes with fireworks.

In past years there have been light snacks available beginning at around 5 o’clock in the evening. There has then been entertainment from between around 5:45 and 7:45 pm. In recent years this has included drumming by whoever wants to bang on a drum. The evening used to finish with a short display of fireworks beginning at 8:00 pm (but at 7:00 pm this year). In 2022 there are fireworks as well as live music and storytelling.

On December 31st in 2022 the Cypress website says that there are “up close and personal fireworks” at 7:00 pm. That makes it sound like the pyrotechnics won’t be that extensive. We have been told though that they’ll be as big as they used to be in years before COVID, and possibly even bigger! There will also be roaming characters, plus live music with Peter GG & Ze Lollygaggers from 4:30 until 6:30 pm.

New Year’s Eve isn’t the only day of the year that Cypress hosts an evening with free fireworks. Most years over the Family Day Weekend in February there is a similar event.

Who Can Attend

The New Year’s Eve celebrations at Cypress are only for paying “ski pass” and “day-ticket-holding” guests. It’s a free event though, and the main festivities are held just outside the chalet.

Below is a short video clip showing what happens at Cypress Mountain before the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. As you’ll see, it’s a small event, but both free and fun.

Other New Year’s Events in Metro Vancouver

Other places in the Lower Mainland have New Year’s Eve events, including at other ski hills (or at least they do in years without COVID-19).

Grouse Mountain, as an example, usually hosts an evening of family-friendly activities (and it does so in 2022). Mt. St. Seymour, meanwhile, used to host its Family First Night which featured all kinds of live entertainment as well as snowshoeing, night tubing, sledding and fireworks. Fireworks and other activities are happening at Grouse Mountain in 2022, but not at Mt. Seymour (at least not to our knowledge).

In downtown Vancouver there used to be a massive New Year’s event at Canada Place, but that ended in 2018. The big fireworks display was set to debut even bigger and better at False Creek in 2020, but that was cancelled due to the pandemic. It hoped to run in 2021 and then in 2022, but they got cancelled those years too.
