About Massey Theatre

Massey Theatre hosts a wide variety of shows and productions. Many different performing arts groups use and rent the venue and its facilities. They range from local community performances to international artists.

When Massey Theatre first opened in 1949 it was the largest theatre in the province. Renowned musicians and performers from around the world have graced the theatre’s stage for over 70 years, and they continue to do so today. Some of the most famous performers at the theatre include musicians such as Jann Arden and The Brothers Landreth.

The theatre was constructed in a proscenium style, meaning that it has a distinguishable arc that extends out from the stage to the high ceiling.

The Massey Theatre proudly supports and showcases up-and-coming performers and local community groups. In addition to being a place where you can enjoy concerts and live theatre, people can also rent the facilities. See the Massey Theatre website for details about bookings and technical information.

In total the Massey Theatre can seat up to 1,260 guests. The seats are spread over two levels with the majority of seats being on the main level and some being on the balcony level. The balcony level seats, however, are not wheelchair-accessible.

The Plaskett Gallery

The Massey Theatre is also home to an art gallery named after the famous Canadian painter Joseph Plaskett. The gallery’s namesake was also born in New Westminster and died in 2014.

As of the last time we checked, opening hours for the gallery were from 1:00 until 4:00 pm Tuesdays to Fridays. The gallery is also open if there is a show on stage at the theatre and by appointment.

The Plaskett Gallery often showcases the work of local up-and-coming artists. An open call for artwork is held four times a year in January, April, July and October. Past exhibits have included art from New West Secondary fine arts students, local Indigenous artists and more.
