Case of the Hotel Detective Game with Vancouver Mysteries

The Case of the Hotel Detective is a murder-mystery game offered by Vancouver Mysteries. Unlike some of the other games hosted by the Vancouver-based company (all of which are lots of fun), this particular game can be played at a table indoors. It doesn’t involve walking and you don’t need a big space. There’s no need to worry about the weather either.

In this game teams work together to solve challenges, uncover clues and piece together a fictional murder. There are locked boxes, special devices and intricate puzzles involved. The public version of The Case of the Hotel Detective is played at a hotel in downtown Vancouver. The Portable Version, on the other hand, can be enjoyed anywhere you like in or near the City of Vancouver (almost). With the former, it’s usually a game that’s open to the public. You can join it with a teammate or with a group of friends. With the latter, it’s an exclusive, private game for just you and whoever you want to invite.

Downtown Hotel Location and Game Details

Public special events featuring The Case of the Hotel Detective take place at Delta Hotels Vancouver Downtown Suites. The hotel’s address is 550 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver. The hotel is across the street from the Harbour Centre and Vancouver Lookout. It’s also less than a 5-minute walk from Waterfront Station. As of late 2024, events run on Thursdays at 7:00 pm and Saturdays at 4:00 pm.

The experience begins by meeting a detective from Vancouver Mysteries in the hotel lobby. The detective gives each team two suitcases full of evidence and other required materials. Teams then work together in groups of up to 10 players and try to solve the murder-mystery story. If you sign up with a friend or two, you will likely join other players who registered for the same time. It’s a fun way to meet new people and have fun indoors.

These games run for about 90 minutes and are only available for folks ages 19 and above. Admission costs $55 per person and includes a Stock Board of food from the hotel’s Stock and Supply restaurant. You also get your choice of beer or wine.

Portable Murder-Mystery Game

The portable version of The Case of the Hotel Detective can be played in the comfort of your home, office or a different place of your choice, as long as it’s in Vancouver or a nearby municipality. The game is the same as the one offered at the hotel, but for private events.

A game operator meets you and your group of friends in character as a detective. The operator stays for the full game in case players need help. Again, the goal is to solve the murder-mystery by going through evidence. It’s a fun activity for birthday parties, team building sessions, or game nights with family and friends.

Private games run for 90 minutes and cost $500 for groups of up to 10 players. Adding another 10 players costs $40 more per person, and each additional player after that costs $25 each. Between 5 and 50 people can play in total (where 50 people will cost $1650 which works out to $33 per person).
