Vancouver Mural Festival

Vancouver Mural Festival

The Vancouver Mural Festival features the painting of murals in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. One of its events most years is a giant street party.

In 2022 the Vancouver Mural Festival returns with a variety of events between August 4th and 14th, including the popular street party.

The 2022 Mural Festival

The Vancouver Mural Festival ran from August 4th until the 22nd in 2021. Because of COVID-19, there wasn’t the usual massive street party last year, although there was still plenty to check out.

In 2022 the Vancouver Mural Festival runs from August 4th to the 14th. The large street party returns on the last day of the festival.

This year’s Vancouver Mural Festival features over 30 new murals to check out in 8 different neighbourhoods, all painted by about 50 artists. There are murals all the way from the North Shore to downtown and the West End, as well as in Marpole and the River District further south.

The creation of these murals is not the only part of the festival either. There’s at least one event scheduled to take place on each of the 11 days of the Vancouver Mural Festival. There are public talks, mural tours, events at the City Centre Hub, and of course, the Festival Street Party on August 14th.

Vancouver Mural Festival Street Party

The Vancouver Mural Festival Street Party is a massive event that involves public murals, art, live music and street festival activities.

The 2020 festival was held in a revised format because of COVID-19, so a lot of the usual in-person festivities didn’t take place that year. In 2021 the Vancouver Mural Festival celebrated its 6th year, but without the street party.

Fortunately, the popular event returns in 2022 and takes place on Sunday, August 14th.

Street Party Location

The street party portion of the festival in 2019 took place in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver along Main Street between 7th Avenue and 12th Avenue.

In 2022 the Vancouver Mural Festival Street Party takes place at a different location. This year, the event is held at and around 900 Granville Street. Festivities are between Smithe and Helmcken Street. The area is about a 10-minute walk away from the Granville SkyTrain Station.

Bands that performed at the event in 2019 included Imur, Ashleigh Ball, Blonde Diamond, Haley Blais, Missy D & Friends, Quarterback, Francis Arevaleo, Sleepy Gonzales and Sam the Astronaut.

In 2022 the lineup of live music includes Silent J, Kristina Lao, Hatim, Bradley Barkman, TRS and Ahsia.

What to Expect

Folk attending the street party can expect to see tens of thousands of people, artistic murals on buildings, dozens of market vendors, art in the street and live entertainment on a couple of stages.

In 2022 the live entertainment takes place on two stages during the Vancouver Mural Festival Street Party. One stage features DJs, drag and dance performances, while the other stage is mainly for live music.
